ESAB REBEL EMP 215IC power board problem

Hello to the esab forum. I am a new guy to the forum. Coming to get some help from your veterans.
A little bit of background. We are a auto repair shop, we purchased the rebel emp 215ic a few years back. The machine stopped working a few month ago, no power up. I opened up the side panel, found a part on the main powerboard was burnt, soot was found all over the surrounding area.
The question is, what the part is, I am guessing a thermistor. It is marked with VR1, right between line 1 and line 2. Since it was burnt really good, I could not find any mark on the part to know the real part number of the spec of it. Tried a lws, new board only, they don't repair the board, it cost more than a new machine. I did not take the board out yet, I will try to load a picture to show it better.
    thanks in advance.Name: IMG_20190917_081601.jpg

Re: ESAB REBEL EMP 215IC power board problem

Looking at the location of the destroyed part, it appears to be between the inputs, L2 and ?. Indicating to me that it is an MOV to protect the circuit from high voltage spikes, etc. The foil on the reverse side could also be blown off or damaged. They are sized according to voltage, 300,600,etc. This could be the only damaged part on the board but you won't know until you remove the board and examine the foil circuitry. Good luck, Bob

This machine isn't too old. I don't think they will have them at Innovat unless there is a high failure rate. It may still be under warranty. Find out when you bought it. It has a three year warranty.

Innovat can repair the board - might be less expensive that a new one.

Re: ESAB REBEL EMP 215IC power board problem

    Hi everyone,
I finally received the MOV(390V, 20MM diameter for a greater survival amp) and had some time today to work on the machine. Replaced the burnt MOV, checked the continuity, one of the power switch blade shot too. It is a 25A rated switch in the machine, could only find a 15A piece. After checking everything, hooked to 240V, everything worked. Did not have much time, ran a few 6010, worked.
So, I believe the high volt reached the clamping limit of the MOV and shot the MOV itself together with the switch. Cost $20. Thanks everyone especially rhunt for your input.

That's good news. $20.00 is cheap for a welder repair these days.

Blown input MOV is not covered under ESABs warranty. Most of the time the cause is voltage spikes or wrong line voltage.
    Check you line.

Right, high voltage for sure. Shop has 208 and 120 only. Just did not know what happened, it is a shop machine, lots of hands reach it.
