Dry cut saws recommendations

I'm the one (one of) who asks all of the questions, so here's a chance for me to give something back.

A year or so ago I purchased a Skilsaw Dry Cut saw 12". I looked at most everything out there to include: Makita (12"), Evolution (15") ( I own one of their steel cutting circular saws, too), MK Morse (14") and CS Unitec (14"). There are others.

The CS Unitec seemed to be the most bulletproof and sturdy, but it's a bit pricier than the rest. I like the Evolution circular saw that I own, but their chop saw wasn't very compelling to me. Second place and it was probably a tie for what I was looking for, was Makita. They have great reviews.

The Skilsaw is well-built and works very well. No complaints. I have found that you have to be very careful with the speed and material (how it's placed, etc.) you cut, as a few times the blade got snagged on the material, and it put a good size gouge into the base/surface. Hope this helps a bit.

I have an Evolution & a Dewalt. The Evolution is a better saw IMHO. Seems to have a better base & vise.

I had a early model Evolution saw I bought on Clearance . I had to shim it for a square cut. I didn't like it at all.
A buddy had the Milwaukee which is discontinued. Makita seems to be the favorite.
IF you plan to cut sheet steel, the Milwaukee metal cutting circular saw is great !

I have a Evolution 14" Rage 2 with the multi-purpose blade and it works just ok. The bad thing about is the weak clamping mechanism. It's just bent 1/8" sheet, as is the base. I'm eyeing the EVO SAW380 with a 15" blade.

Really like my EVO SAW380, I reckon I have gone through over 20 blades in past 4 years. Learned the hard way how to get best life out of them. Have yet to try it with a 15" blade, but its on my list.


I got it on Amazon, as where I also get my blades. Only tried 3 brands do far, Evolution blades are good, Concord are cheaper and okay for thin stuff, I think the best value is the Oshlun blades. (A quick look on Amazon has the Evolution blades same price as Oshlun at the moment so I would go with Evo).

Makita lc-1230. For blades I like the original Makita but Milwaukee makes a real long lasting metal cutting blade.

Generally speaking, make sure the part is clamped properly (even better if the part that is not typically supported to the right of the blade, is), cut slow, and maybe even use a cutting wax on the teeth if you're willing to deal with the clean-up. Oh and try to position the part so the blade is not engaging more material than it is rated for (IE: cutting square/rectangular tubing so that it is in a diamond "♦" orientation vertically, helps out more than cutting with the tube flat on one side ■).

I have had the EVO 355 for many years. Great saw. I believe they make The Morse saws as well.

Great advise that also applies to BANDSAW blades.

With blade life does applied pressure of blade against material being cut play any part or factor into the equation. I was under the impression that I should be applying light pressure to let the blade do most of the cutting and watch for sparks in that if there is a lot of sparks then too much pressure is being applied ?

You just want a nice even feed, not too much pressure... a good blade will go right through easy enough but once it gets dull you will need some pressure.
