The adjustment might be on the rods like my Lufkin set.
My 823 arrived earlier this week, and I finally got it figured out as far as adjustments. Real easy actually, just a matter of loosening the collet, and rotating the barrel.
Also happened on another 124 for almost nothing, I mean it was only a buck more than the shipping (either the guy didn't know what he had, or it wasn't selling cause it had no case). Complete, and in pretty good condition. Haven't use it yet, but it might be out of calibration (shrug). Dunno till I find out I guess. Couldn't pass it up. God Only Knows when it was made.
But the burning questions is: How do ya calibrate these dam things???? I called Starrett, and got a MORON in the tech assistance dept. His only advice was to send it in to be repaired. IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE REPAIRED I JUST WANNA KNOW HOW TO ADJUST IT
The modern version, I believe, has a rotating barrel, just like the 823...…….but these older ones...…...nothing. The barrel, far as I can tell, is solid. I'm thinking it's also linked somehow to the collet, but I'm not sure
The adjustment might be on the rods like my Lufkin set.

Have you checked it against a known accurate outside mic?? That's the way I always used my inside mics anyway.

THANKS GUYS! I see the flats for wrenches on the rod tips now
Over a known mic, I'm getting about +.005 . It varies with each rod.
take your time and adjust each rod using an outside mic that has been set with a standard. Certified calibration is only for the big companies. They have so many guys that do not have a clue using the stuff that they have to have an outside company certify them. Then they forbid anyone to adjust them in the field. A private set that has been adjusted by the man that will use them is as good if not better. Each person has a different feel on a mic anyway and I have seen as much as .005 difference in measurement depending on who has their hand on them. When we did turbines the same couple guys always took all the readings and had to take them 2 times with an observer there in order to limit human error. Even then there was the occasional .025" error from when someone miscounted the marks on the mic. The superintendent alway had the reading redone if he would see a .025" difference in a group of readings or if there was some numbers that did not make sense. And yes I made some errors with them myself on occasion. It is very common to have errors when different mic sets are used on different jobs and working for different companies. There are some brands that are very hard to read consistantly when the operator only uses that set once a year.

I have a set something like that, don't know what model number.
It is 2 to 12 inches. I tend to use the telescope gages more and measure with outside mics.

Nice sets farmer. We have several of those at work up to 36 inches.Due to iso and as requirements all our calibrations are certified to a minimum 10xtimes accuracy of the smallest graduation.
Gary,if anybody in our shop has any more than .0002 variation in feel they are taken to the quality lab and retrained to use mics.
We do mostly aerospace and defense, some mining and industrial.. 0001 out of tolerance is a scrap part many times.
I agree with you, that is why some people were not ever aloud to take mic readings. It was not uncommon for me to work for 10 contractors in a given year . I was not talking about one shop but hundreds of men working for various companies with various brands of mic sets . When working for a new to me contractor there was always a trial time where they would try to find out what you could or could not do and many were put in jobs where they could not damage them selves, others or the work after finding their limits.

I have all that stuff but only trust what a outside micrometer says.
...zap!
I am not completely insane..

Do not attempt.
Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.
So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
ive used both types (tubular set on top, and solid rods on bottom pic). the tube type are nicer to handle/work with, and i think i get a better feel w/ them. so i bought the hollow tube ones on top, but they came in a red case.
