I could not drive that truck famersammm. Is the switch for a two speed rearend? A friend of mine used to drive an old truck from the 60-70's it had a 2 speed. I need to look at one of those. Does it have two different ring gears?

No, that's the range selector. He has a 10 speed Roadranger… You go through the 5 gears once then pull the selector up to high range and go through them again.
Two speed rears have one ring gear with a planetary unit in the differential carrier shifted by a small electric motor, air actuator, or in some of the older gas power trucks a vacuum actuator. Or in the case of a '48 Ford F-6 I drove once, a lever to shift it.

This old critter, 1970 with a 69 SA200 had the vacuum shifter too. It popped a diaphragm on me one day and I had to use vise grips on the hose to get home. Chevy dealer had it in stock, that I couldn't believe. Name: 20191201_113646.jpg

Samm, I know it wasn't the grinding that caused that cracking. But I would be waiting to see how long that flywheel lasted., I can see it go kaboom quickly. And when I was driving, did just as you said.

no glasses, no gloves, open toed sandals, lol. Bet he is good because he has to redo every job a week later , gives him plenty of practice. I am glad those trucks are separated from us by many miles and oceans so they never see our roads.

I've never experienced a blown flywheel, Thank God. I can just imagine all those pieces coming up through the floor. I suppose your main protection would be the bell housing.

I just really don't know what happens in this kind of situation.

I have naive question. If I recall he removed three layers of C channel or the equivalent. That is not how it came from the factory is it? To be honest the kid seemed to work well with the limited tools and materials and I tip my hat to him.

I was a diesel mechanic some time long ago. I used to drive part time on the weekends for the same company. Best advise I ever got from an old driver was "your foot is either on the clutch on the floor or it's off the clutch". Never left him a clutch with no free play after that.
