Harbor Freight 20" drill also? Thats the press im replacing with this one. Has honestly been and still is a great machine for what it cost me.

What happens when you crash it?

I've, at one time, or other, crashed a tool or two. Maybe break a bit, or something comes loose from the table...……...etc...….. It's no biggee, other than the usual dope slap to my own forehead. Belts slip, and the machine lives to see another day. Always wondered how a geared machine would react.

For me gear drives break the bit or whatever is in the chuck... but they always have the power to drill

It doesn't stall...it just spins and breaks...they will hurt you if you are not smart enough to put someone between you and said spinning work piece

I got a nice keyless chuck from Shars.com for a reasonable price that i really like. Grabs bits like grim death, and very accurate and well turned-out. I think it was like $80 a couple years back?

Thanks for the info. What size is that press of yours? 20 Ton? 40 ton?

The swag finger break will bend A pretty good length chunk of 1/4”

1/8” it will do the full length.

I've, at one time, or other, crashed a tool or two. Maybe break a bit, or something comes loose from the table...……...etc...….. It's no biggee, other than the usual dope slap to my own forehead. Belts slip, and the machine lives to see another day. Always wondered how a geared machine would react.

With a gearhead drill press you ALWAYS have a stop designed into your plan to drill a hole. Weather it is just rotating a long piece around to where it contacts the column of the drill press or having to clamp it down or put it in a vise that is bolted down.

No doubt they can hurt you but no different than running a gearhead lathe or a radial drill ( that are all gear driven ). Not as dangerous as running a grinder without eye protection and or a guard.

The secret to not breaking tools is , #1 have a sharp bit, #2 have correct RPM, #3 Use lubricant, #4 do not use more down pressure than is need for a cut. To the dismay of most too little down pressure dulls the bit , too much breaks the tool. More pressure is needed to drill correctly than most people think. If the bit is sharp you should have a nice chip curl coming off the bit. Increase pressure until this happens. If the chips come off in just short little chunks then stop and sharpen the bit. When I drill my cutting oil is smoking heavy from the heat. To the point where sometimes I have to move my head out of the smoke cloud on larger holes. I have to release pressure when drilling to break off the chip then start pressing again.

Not really sure, because I've never crashed a tool... had a few workpieces come loose and broke a few drill bits

It's the price you pay for having more drilling grunt...

I didn't get a picture but I was drilling and lost the edge on the start of the cut, harbor freight silver deming drill, heard the noise change and ran over to the drill, by the time I got there I had friction welded the bit to the plate had to take it out of the chuck and wack it with a hammer to break the weld loose. with enough power and reverse it is so nice tapping holes, always straight, not damaging the taps by using an impact. or breaking taps because of the side load of a large tap wrench and a musclehead. drill will litterly tap a 3/4" hole in 1.5" plate at 32 rpm then put it in reverse and back out, all done. i will usually leave a the bit not bottomed in the chuck so if something goes wrong I have time to correct it before breakage. this in a mill or my 3' radial

So in reading the manual for the drill awaiting its arrival, i notice it comes depleted of
Oil.

It needs 4.75 quarts of oil, which I’m guessing are not included.

The manual says use ISO 32 oil.

I see there is ISO 320 gear oil, which is extremely expensive.

When i search that, it’s hydraulic oil? Is that correct?

Yes that is correct. You can buy it at most any tractor supply or Fleet farm . It is a medium weight hydraulic oil but is also used for lubricant in gearboxes.

Napa carries it as well. Wouldn't be a bad idea to run it for a half hour or so and dump it and replace. The QC and cleaning is always the greatest on some of the import machines. 5 gallons of hydraulic oil is about 40$ here so it's pretty cheap insurance.

Thanks for the tip, for $10 in oil I’ll probably do that.

It should be here Friday. I’m not sure if it comes assembled or what, i haven’t a clue how I’m gonna move it.

I have my current 300 lb press on a grizzly drill press stand with casters hoping i can use it.

I suggest you completely drain any oil in the machine. Sometimes the machines do come with some oil in them.

Then, run a magnet around the bottom of the sump. Then completely disassemble the machine to remove the 5lbs of crap ya find in there

Would this set of 7 be enough or am i gonna need the interim sizes? There’s a 13 set as well.

I have the 13 piece set and can only think of one time I used a 7/16" one. I don't have a lot of vertical travel and used the 7)16" one to hold a twist drill directly to give me enough space to drill a thick part. For the most part I imagine you will be using a drill chuck anyway. I think I may have used a 3/16" to hold a small end mill as well.

The 7 pc set will probably do fine . If you need one in between in the future you could buy just the one you need. If you had a milling machine i would say get the 13 pc set.

What are there quoted tolerances? I believe the High precision set is .0005 and the precision one is .0006 If that is the case I would just get the precision set. There again if you had a milling machine I would go to the high precision set.
