    Belt Grinder Build

I finally had time to start building a new 2x72 belt grinder based on Jeremy Schmidt's plans.

Started by cutting out most of the pieces.

Then tack welded the plates around 1 1/2" square bar with shims. Used the press to remove bar and shims.

    Welded the tubes.

Then aligned everything and welded the hinges on.

Hopefully I"ll get some more done tomorrow.

Thanks, I got a little more done this evening. Not as much as I wanted to. I am using a different size motor so had to modify the design a little to make sure it was lined up properly.Name: IMG_5510.jpg

    Hell, that looks good.

When I built the tube bender, I didn't tack it before welding. I welded directly when it was clamped. I had so many stinkin' clamps on the thing that I couldn't see crap when welding. In retrospect, I wish I woulda just tacked it, and saved the trouble.

How did you cut your plate parts? Bandsaw? Did you just glue full size printouts of the plans on the steel and brute force it?

Find a CNC plasma to cut the parts, a small amount of clean up and you done.

Thanks!, I had clamps everywhere too when tacking then eliminated what clamps I could to weld it out.

I actually printed the diagrams on to full sheet adhesive backed shipping labels then cut them out, stuck them on the metal, and cut out with a band saw. Some of the metal I used was scrap from other projects and was rusty so I put them all in the blasting cabinet and cleaned them up after cutting to remove rust and mill scale. Getting the pieces prepped was definetly the most time consuming part.

Although acourtjester is right it would have been a lot easier to have them cut but I didn't mind cutting them.

I'm not sure what is taking you so long.

Kidding of course! You are moving fast!

What are you using for a motor?

A few more pics. Got the Platten basicaly done and the contact wheel holder almost finished. Also built a stand for it.

Looks really nice. You are very skilled.

Do you have a VFD picked out?

Thanks, I have one that I got with the motor can't remember the brand. I'll look tomorrow. I finished today except for wiring and painting but was in a hurry and didn't take any pics I will take some tomorrow when I wire it and look at the VFD specs.

The motor's weight appears to be eccentric relative to the rotation shaft. Is there any attempt to counter balance this design or the eccentric weight is negligible?

It's negligible when everything is together it's pretty easy to adjust and is rock solid when running.

Still need to paint, build a small wheel attachment and radius attachment. But it runs great and tracks perfectly.

That looks excellent! Thanks for all the pictures, I like the flat face vs radius wheel option. I was puzzling over the tool rest, seeing the vertical and angle adjustment clearly. I just didn't see keeping it centered on the belt. Especially as the belt orientation changes from vertical to horizontal. I like how the geometry maintains center in both positions with either the radius wheel or flat face belt. I think the secret is position of the bottom wheel of the flat face compared to the radius wheel. Appreciate you sharing this build.

Thanks and You're welcome! The belts always track centered on the hinge bolt and as long as the height of the attachment is where it should be it will stay centered.

Your grinder looks good as well. Unfortunately, I took the VFD I have apart years ago when I was using it for another tool and put it in a weatherproof case so I can't find a model number on it. It is a cheapo from eBay the only issue was it had a cooling fan that could suck metal shavings into it. That's why I put it in the case. I attached a pic of the front.

Is your motor single phase or 3 phase?

    Single...so I need a new motor...

Unless you know some magic to make a single into a variable.

I believe they do make single-phase output VFDs but I don't know enough about them to say for sure they would work with your motor. I am definitely not an expert on motors. I found my motor used on craigslist years ago and think the VFD was only 150 or so on eBay. Just have to get a VFD capable of at least the motors HP.
