Re: What can you do with pieces of filler rod?

other than filling in gaps with them to weld over..not much..how long are the pieces your talking about? usually I can get them down to a few inches .....im thinking if you can make a jig with a small clamp you can use them up to 3/4 to 1 inch pieces...
almost like a refillable pencil or even a soap stone holder but able to hold thinner rods..to hold in your hand to feed the smaller pieces as you weld...

Don't have a tig but be it brass or iron I weld the new to the stub that's stuck in the puddle with my O/A torch and carry on.

I keep a pair of curved hemostats handy, helps to use up short pieces of brazing rod, and also lets you feed from different directions on small things.

I've found their rather small size makes them fit rather nicely in my garbage can.

Put the last bit of filler in the oxy/acetylene drill bit holder for that style tip cleaner. It will allow you to use them down to 1/2" if you wanted.

Good for up to 1/16" filler but could modify to fit larger easily.

I do not mess with the shorts but this would get them down really short easily.

Usually if you have filler your doing oxy/acetylene or tig so just tack them if you want to use every inch.

I seriously think you're overthinking this...is it really worth the time and money?

Next will be joining small pieces of tungsten...

EDIT: in fact here's something I would wager a guess on...it would be cheaper to recycle and melt down both filler and tungsten and re manufacture new.

I think he was being sarcastic.

I can only hope you're correct, but I don't think so from some of his other posts. He posted a similar question on another welding forum, trying to find out what the melting point is on filler. Sounds like he's trying to figure out a way to stick it together.

Nothing wrong exploring different avenues. Who knows?

find your self a "pin vice", usually get one in a hobby store and they have different size collets in them. I use one because of my "asbestos" fingers. They see too much sunlight and they burn.

I'm certainly not trying to convince you one way or the other. From a sensible standpoint you end up with about 3"-4" from a 36" length of filler, so it's about 10%. If you think about 10% of the cost of what the filler actually costs, I think you'll start to see that it really doesn't make sense.

However, if you could get enough of it, it might be recyclable. I don't know if the outer coating would prevent it from easily being able to melt down to recycle without cleaning.

Most people will continue to toss out the last few inches, kinda like pop cans. People are lazy in general, I hate to say.

No matter what, I think the difficult part is going to be getting anyone to collect the waste, it needs to be compelling.

I'm still trying to figure out how to splice that last 15' of mig wire on the new roll.🤣

Re: What can you do with pieces of filler rod?

You can save them. When you burn you last rod on Saturday night, suddenly a 4 inch stub is not so useless. The also work as shims for centering item inside tubing prior to welding. You can twist the to make jewelry, clips, key rings or hooks for holding tools. Twisting adds strength. You can mock up a spiral stair and use them as balusters.

Oh,I am currently modding a stop on my iron worker. It appears I used filler wire to attach / hook the spring. I made the stop a few years ago, deficiencies arose today.

That is what the oxy/acetylene tip cleaners use. Pin Vise.
