    Ntm

I picked this up from the ARC thrift store the other day. It a Ryobi 12" drill press and at $69.00 I thought it was a good deal. The spindle is tight and there's no wobble in it. The only problem is that it has some surface rust on the table and column that I need to clean up. Any ideas on the best way to do that? This had to come from somewhere else because we don't have rust like this in Colorado.

wire wheel then spray with enox and allow to dry. Leaves a coating that protects against further rust.

Any engineers supplies, hardware store etc will have enox. Haven't seen corrosion x in Oz so don't know about it. I've had very good results with enox.

You don't need any fancy chemicals.
600 grit sandpaper and car wax is your friend.

For the flat surfaces try a single edge razor blade dry. It will remove the bulk of it, then finish up with Scotchbright, 600 paper, etc. using lubricant like WD-40.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I prefer the least cost an more elbow grease options.

    Re: Ntm

How about some good 'ol diesel and some 600 grit wet/dry ?

Diesel is easy on your hands, many people don't know you can actually wash your hands in it. As a bonus it leaves some lubrication in the metal to prevent rust in the future.

That said, I like to use T-9 in my shop for rust preventative, it's not designed to remove rust however.

Edit: I should add, Boeshield has a product called RustFree that does remove rust, but I think too many products confuses the issue. You can get diesel at just about any gas station, or kerosene will work the same.

    Re: Ntm

Too much thought going into a simple task.... just hit it with some scotchbrite or fine sand paper and call it a day. maybe a spritz of WD on a paper towel... DONE.

that drill press looks almost identical to my Craftsman cept mine has a square table.

A small drill press vice comes in handy also.

I have the vice but I'm considering getting a cross-slide to go with it.

    Citric Acid

Non-toxic, very little elbow grease, and works pretty good on horseshoes too:

Being the clod I usually am...........rust like that, even on a machine table, gets the cup brush treatment. NOT A HONKIN' WELDING CUP BRUSH Just a bronze/brass leetle cup brush in a die grinder. Takes the crud off without digging into the soft iron.

Then slather a little hydraulic oil on your hands, and caress the metal Not where it's drippin' off your pudgy lil' fingers........just so the skin is coated with a light bit of oil, then smoogie it around with a rag that has the same oil on it. Don't believe me..............just try wiping hydraulic oil offa anything without some solvent I even get the stuff on my dog when I work with it!!
