    Would be interesting to know the reasons for adding the additional steel if it's already boxed.

    Yes it would be.

    A lot of those frames/bodies were used in circle track cars. As time went by the frames became harder to get so they rules allowed fabricated frame sections and progressed to completely fabricated chassis. Never seen any of the original factory chassis plated up in that area as the OP described.

    I do a lot of over head welding when doing cages, bumpers and re-enforcing frames, oh and exhaust. The key is practice, and more practice, but do it "overhead" not at a bench. Being Comfortable is the key, like someone said get a jack stand or something to stabilize your arm. I have even used milk crates (with welding blankets on them). Always do a "prerun" of your weld path, that will help too in making sure your farthest reach is with your comfort. I turn wire speed done a bit and heat up a bit.....

    This isn’t structural welding, so get that out of your head. Personally, I would turn the machine up and do vertical down welds, then turn it down for the bottom overhead welds. The top one shouldn’t be too tough. As was said, practice, practice, and get comfortable and protect yourself from sparks.

    I don't know why he is trying to do vertical up? I never do vertical up unless there is no other option.. Vertical down is the key. Again, turn the heat up slightly and wire speed down and just work that puddle nice ans simple....

    biggest thing to do is section or add reinforcement is to do it in a Z pattern. stronger and better weld.

    Frame strength - look to heavy equipment for the answer to the strongest weld pattern - it's a sideways v with a soft radius at the tip. Fishmouth it baby!
