    Roller Chain Breaker?

Anyone made or have a bench top roller chain breaker?

I have to make custom sized #40 roller chains fairly frequently and using the little $15 hand one is awful.

I found one made by USA chain but it’s $600.

Was interested in maybe a homemade one or something.

The Smith Tool, chain a part one works really well. Be sure to check sizes as they make a few different models.

I see your looking for bench top, the one I described can be mounted in a vise and using a cordless impact would be fairly quick.

I don't do that many so I just use the hand held one. I could see if you were doing a lot of chain breaking it would be agrivating.

I just grind the "heads off and knock them apart with a punch.
    Not ideal either!

Should+ you decide to make your own. If screw style, then a bearing in the shaft helps a lot. Minimizing friction and reducing the pin from walking.

A impact wrench is a good idea.

    Are you reusing the links/pins.?

    Re: Roller Chain Breaker?

Perhaps a impact wrench is not the best idea. Just from a potential shattering of the extraction pin. I have bent cheap ones, due to miss alignment and walking of the pin. bent pins wont align, either. What issue are you having?

Same here. Most of the time I'm discarding the link, so grinding isn't a big deal. You put it all back together with a repair/connector link anyways (shrug)

Looked at the video. Pretty cool tool. Good for saving time. It takes a 5 minute job, and does it in seconds.

Doesn't do anything a grinder won't do. Still gotta put it back together with a repair link.

Think I’m gonna design my own tomorrow...

Plasma cut holding plate to catch the chain. And just copy their die.

Make it work by impact gun under screw force so i don’t have to design a lever system. Small die springs to return it.

Cool!!! post it up when you get it done and working

I don't do too many... but every now and then it's usually a grinder job.

I used to grind them off just below flush on a bench grinder, then tap out with a punch. No pliers required.
