You usually use a large, flame heated soldering iron. Looks like a metal wedge with a handle, and a torch pointed at it. Acid flux and plenty of lead. I hear it's hard to keep the galvanized coating from getting damaged in the process.

The downside is I've seen the solder eaten clean off in about 10 years in severe situations due to galvanic corrosion. Layering is really the way to go, but a good sealant would likely outlast even soldering these days.

Lol, as I said, I've paid people to make it in the past but if you skip the first two minutes of this video, it gets to the point. There may be better videos but this is the first that came up. I have done some small flashing modifications with a propane torch it doesn't take very much heat.

The solder melting point should be less than 400 F so it's much less than OA. Just to be clear, we're not talking about high-temp silver solder that is at near brazing temperature.

That is very interesting. I have never seen that before. Ok, now I see. I would not have imagined that.

I wonder how much different it would be to do an outside corner joint?

Probably a lot less heat needed.

    Looks great
I would have used at less 18 ga stays flatter after welding

Any chance you could partner with the roofers at this point? Assuming they have the soldering equipment to finish it out?

See how it works with mig. But I bite the bullet if I can and use material a ga heavier even if I have to suck the difference in cost if it doesnt bother somebody or even upsell that feature. Would be 2x as easy 20 ga and another notch at 18.

I have seen some expensive good lookin stuff soldered together that come apart with joint not particuarly well designed. Welded sheet metal is really strong, it rusts but its tough.

Solder is no good for that design. You must have overlapping seams for soldering. You don't solder butt welded steel sheet metal.
