Trailer hitch t-bar extention for canoe

I want to build one of these as a TIG project. Looks the materials will be expensive.

My FIL gave me a piece of quarter inch 2x2 that fits right into my receiver that is certainly not what i will fab this thing with entirely but the piece going into the receiver will be just fine.

I think I am looking at hot rolled A500 2x2 but I dont know what is an optimal thickness for the tubing can be.

Also need a short section of 2.5 x2.5 square for under the “T”.

The tubing i am thinking of is SQUARE but with rounded corners.

The bulk of the canoe weight will rest on the factory rack And Yakima rack on our Sienna, with an end resting on this contraption.

I want the ability to remove the T-bar when stored.

Here are some pictures. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

If you can find telescoping tube like this , you could use it as well.

I made something similar. I use it to carry 12' stock on my VW wagon. It works great and spreads out the load and the stock doesn't flex as much when I'm driving at 65mph.

Very nice. I found some material in my father in law’s shop . From left to right: 2x2x 0.25 receiver tube base; upper receiver 2x2x 0.125; top bar and bar upright is 1.75 x 1.75 x .188. I cut everything to length or at least rough cut and fine tune once assembly begins.
