What 240v Bench stick welder woukd be a good equivalent?

    https://www.lincolnelectric.com/asse...oln3/im308.pdf

My father in law has a Weldanpower ac/dc stick welder...225a.

This thing is a power house and is mounted on its own trailer.

he wants one for the bench that he can plug into the wall instead of firing up this welder’s generator to use it.

What a good machine? No one does tig over here, except me ( ahem).....maybe a mig stick machine that does 200+ amps?

    Any ideas?

But he would probably fall in love with little stick/tig inverter machine.

    HTP221 is cool.
You might be able to get it in dual voltage also
Not sure/ mine is 220v only

Craigslist is usually covered up with Lincoln 225's and 225/160 if you have to have dc.
The key advantage with these is there is not one single circuit board in them!

For a bench machine, i would just go to Harbor Freight and get one with the features you want. Get the extended warranty and simply return it if it goes bad during the warranty period.

Much easier than trying to get a refund from an internet purchase. If he wants to spend more money there's an abundance of machine options. You would have to specify a lot more details.

A lot of these machines are dual voltage.

A budget would be nice to know. You can get a 200$ stick machine or a 5,000$ multi process machine that will stick weld. A 200 amp inverter is probably the ideal choice but without enough information that's a stab in the dark.

I love all these “ make America great” guys

And the first thing they do is point you to Buying a Chinese product.

    (Louie)

I guess it’s kind of unavoidable These days

But when you walk into the doors of Harbor freight

    know exactly what you’re getting.

Maybe more Chinese tariffs is a good thing.

If he is a hard core stick welding aficionado, either one of these will be really hard to beat. Make sure they are in 100% working order before forking over the cash. If they work chances are you will never need another stick welder again.

I think the esab mini arc 180 would be hard to beat. 600$ or so.

The Miller is over priced for sure. It's a machine before the Dialarc 250. Lincoln looks pretty rough cosmetically for the asking price. $300 sounds more reasonable.

Yeah, really. 5 or so years back I got an Idealarc 250 in nice shape that had been repainted and has about 200 ft of 1/0 leads in great shape. Came with the tricycle cart. $350. It was about an hour's drive west of Richmond. A few years prior, I got a Dialarc 250 in nice shape with modest leads and a really nice dolly locally for $300.

Similar story for me. Mine was delivered for $350 CDN ($268 usd)

I cleaned it up and added “cable management”.

Great machines those old Idealarcs! I found a pristine like new 1989 in St Louis. The last year for the round tops. It is my forever stick welder

I replaced my ESAB 161 with the Thermal Arc 161, if it dies I'll get the ESAB 180 I'm sure.

I have had a Miller Thunderbolt 225 AC welder for many years , I know the AC/DC combination are a bit nicer, but this old AC welder puts down a pretty good bead. I have used a variety of rods with it. I like the 7014 the best, but have used quite a bit of the 7018 AC rod also.
