Extension Cord

I recently purchased a Lincoln Pro 180 Mig welder. I would like to make an extension cord for it . My garage is wired with a 40 amp 220 plug for to run this welder ,and my older Miller 225 Amp.Thunderbolt . 40-50 feet is what I'd like to have. Is this doable with that machine ,and the garage wiring. Also is there a wiring diagram I could find to make up this extension cord ?? .

It used to be cost effective to build yer own but by the time you buy the proper cord and connectors you'll be close to an off the shelf one with molded ends.

If you do decide to make your own:

The cord will have white, black and green wires>

White- Hot1
Black- Hot 2
Green- Ground

Cord- SJO cord 8/3


Male connector is easy to find at box stores. 6-50 P (Plug)

Female end: you will not find the proper cord connector because they are really Wall Mount boxes and not designed to be at the end of a cord.

You would need to buy a box and then mount a receptacle in that box.

Forney does make a cord connector:

Forney 58401 Electrical Receptacle, Pin-Type, Portable 50-Amp, 250-Volt,Black around $25.00

Thanks, I am finding out its going to be cheaper to buy one ready made , found a 40 footer on Amazon for 76.95 , 8 gauge cord. I actually found the three prong female for an extension cord on Amazon , along with the male end also , about $35 for the pair , but the 8 gauge cord for 50 feet will be nearly as much as the ready made 40 footer .

You were correct , I needed to look at them a little closer ,yes they are wall mount. Kinda of crazy you can build one end ,but not the other without a box .

Pretty crazy you can buy the extension cords with the molded ends , and you can buy the male end if you needed to replace it, but not the female end .

You will staying with all same plug will same money. The 6-50 is standard for most shops.

I often remove temporary service circuits when permanent circuits are installed. The SJOXXX cords !0/3, 8/4 ,6/4 sometimes up to 100ft. are considered waste when they are no longer needed. I have kept a few over the years, and made my own. If I had to buy the cord, then pre-made would be the better deal. I think Leviton , Hubbell, ArrowHart, and Bryant all make a version of this. Not many electrical supply houses keep them in stock. If its a good 40A 240v circuit you shouldn't have any trouble running a Lincoln Pro Mig 180 .
