Unfortunately i believe the project is on hold, if not indefinitely, prior to the pandemic.

NYC is hurting very badly right now and it was an astronomically priced project. Hundreds of millions if i recall if not approaching a billion.

I work for the fire department and we were actually testing 300’ tall bronto sky lift trucks as precautionary measures for emergencies involving the 600 foot tall wheel. Basically they would take a mobile crane platform with a giant bucket lift on it and throw lights/sirens onto it. Would have been pretty cool.

Yes it has been discontinued, New York state had a falling out with the contractor Mammoet and also a lawsuit in 2017

do you know more about this project because material and parts of this project are stored at the company where I was a shop inspector for a client of state New York?

it always amazes me at the stupidity people in power can dream up to wast tax $. These are the same people that want the feds to bail them out from their past wast of money, time and resources.

Yes you are right it is the same company.
but the london eye was 328 feet high.
and the New York wheel would be 623 feet high.

i would like to know if a new company has been appointed to proceed with this project.

That Ferris wheel would be 1/2 the height of the Empire State Building, or as high as a 40-45 story building.

if it were to be finished. now you have one in Dubai that has become the highest.

what you see here at the arrows is the liquid that is used for magnetic examined (MPT) flowing down.

all welds are 100% UT and MPT examined. there are always welding faults that are repaired within the tolerance of the spec AWS D1.1 and NYC Chapter 17 - 2014

it's funny that someone sees something and draws a conclusion.

Looks like a lot of money was already spent on basically a contender in a pizzing contest. Not unlike the tallest buildings. More of an expensive novelty than anything else. Lots of high quality welding though. Curious why the vertical gussets are cut at a 45 and don't come to point, less chance for cracking?

Amusement rides here are now heavily inspected after the Mindbender roller coaster accident that resulted in 3 fatalities. I was the welding supervisor at the mall for about a year in 2007 and did some welding on the coaster. A big part of the problem was they never translated the German maintainence manuals to English. The designer suffered a heart attack when he heard people had died on his ride. The coaster originally used 4 cars but was reduced to 3 to slow it down some. New bogie assemblies were designed that had had cotter pins and castle nuts to prevent the bolts from coming out. There's a dent in one the large H beam supports where the car hit it.

Fancy talk, but there aren't enough welders, certs, or tests that'd ever convince me to ride in something that tall! I love the pics of the pieces being welded up, but I'll keep my feet on terra firma just in case.

No worries man, it was just an amusement park ride joke Glad to hear that all welds are examined in your case though.

In my state of MN the rides are running with broken welds opening and closing as the rides go around...running joke around here.

I actually have stopped over to attendants between riders getting on and off and pointed out glaring open broken welds and they just shrug...

The arrows in red are the 45 degrees you mean I think. if you weld the corners closed, the tension will sit in the corners and cannot flow away. that is one of the reasons that this is done at high yield strength steel.
