New to forum and to welding

    Hello everyone.
I'm 56 and am just getting into welding. Mostly out of necessity.
I'm a disabled American VET, living in Lima, Peru since 2000. Let's just say I saw the writing on the wall back then....
Anyway, I've recently purchased a MIG welder, after having tried to start with a Swiss made Stick Welder.

Because of my disability injury, I have a really hard time striking and keeping an arc with the stick-welder.
The necessity to learning welding, is to build a staircase to the third floor:

    in the opening above.
My wife's family was kind enough to allow me to build a workshop on the 2nd floor of the house and now we'll need access to the 3rd floor to hang and dry laundry.

So, I'll be asking a bunch of questions and asking for a lot of advice on this website, so please be forewarned some of them might be stupid.

Make sure you practice lots and can do consistently good welds before attempting your staircase. Could be a major liability if it broke when someone was using it. Post your progress pics. on the forum and you'll get some guidance.

Every spot that can be welded, will be. Inside and out. There won't be any glass though.

Check your local building codes on what is required for steel stairways. I was watching a show where they renovate houses and a steel support beam had to be stick welded. There's a member on here who built a similar staircase that could likely offer assistance.
