    New score for the shop

Got wind of a low use Synchrowave 250 through the jungle drum network, so I went and had a look-see this morning. It followed me home...
Came with a nice cart, leads, an air cooled 26 torch, and the argon cylinder. The owner (turns out we worked together years ago) threw in extra tungstens and a bunch of filler, both aluminum and ER70S-6. Got the empty cylinder exchanged a bit ago, so we'll see how rusty I am tomorrow.
Been needing a shop stick machine anyways, dragging leads from the truck gets old in the winter. I'll throw some pics on in a bit.

Here's some pics, looks brand new. The torch has never seen much heat and the stick stinger has never been used.Name: 20201007_121903.jpg

In my shop the stick leads will never be used except by the kids, practicing for their high school welding classes.

I normally use wire in the shop but do a fair amount of hardfacing with stick, so that's probably all I'm going to do with those leads. Primary use will be Aluminum and stainless repairs on trucks and heavy equipment. Got a Caterpillar timing cover with a crack to fix, some body ran an over length bolt through the fan bracket and oops... Got tired of sending that stuff to another shop and it comes back looking like a constipated bird fixed it.

Very nice! The last one I used was at a job shop that I worked at many years ago was a bit different with the digital displays of amps and volts on it.

Yeah, I had a 350LX that was all digital but didn't use it enough to justify keeping it around, it made a good trade in on my 325 Trailblazer.

Re: New score for the shop

I get that people do, but I don't have to use stick. I can work around here. On the farm well there stick is done. But I do not have to use it. I only weld mild steel and AL and not much AL. So I get to use tig primarily and mig secondary. I completely respect those guys here who use arc welding on the regular but I don't have to use that dirty form.

Now I am a bit jealous of your find, I am happy with what I have. Kids get to learn and I get to play.

Not a problem. The crack is only about 3/4" long but makes a bad oil leak. It's not a structural issue and just needs to be sealed.

    Nice score!
When COVID hit I repurposed a single drawer blue point tool cart for a desk. Never woulda happened except my wife saw how much work I put into adapting a laptop mount for standing or sitting. Far from ergonomically correct but if it was too comfortable I would fall asleep right away LOL.

Re: New score for the shop

I get alerts on my phone for marketplace when welders pop up. A few days ago one just like this came up for $1000. I don't know anything else about it, but if it wasn't for the fact that it was 7 hours away, I would have gone to look at it.

One of those that seemed too goo to be true...and probably was.

That's not just stupid high--it's a couple grand over the price of a new unit. Granted, he is throwing in a bottle and cart, but geez...

Re: New score for the shop

Any time I purchased a new welder I did not like putting in shop.
After a few years I would put welders 5 foot off the ground the weight was over 500 pounds but they look great.
The wire feeds I put on a wheels just off floor about 3" I used 60 pound coils and welders did want to lift coil.

That seems really dirt cheap to me. Local guy I know just bought the same machine with a cart and leads but had the water tank below, for $7000.

I didn't get a chance to try it out today, had to make a 4 hour run to pick up some rebuilt Cummins heads and later got to change out a gearbox in a combine... Maybe tomorrow, but I need to get the heads back on that engine. I did scrounge a damaged Allison transmission case out of my scrap pile to get tuned up with.

Re: New score for the shop

Looks like a deal to me! A word of warning on that timing cover. Some moron who will remain nameless punched a hole in one of my John Deere covers (4440) trying to pry off a dampener pulley (yes, it requires a very stout puller...). I took it to a neighboring Hutterite Colony that does a LOT of work in aluminum and stainless steel. Their conclusion was that it was a white metal alloy, but tried it out anyway. Welding went ok, but every time it started to cool down it cracked and I ended up finding a used one. I don't believe they used any pre-heat, so you might want to try that in a large oven that can heat it evenly and cool it slowly.

Re: New score for the shop

High temp Sillycone can be your friend. I don't even bother to weld a crack if it isn't critical.........just put the goo on it.

K'kins cut her hand while putting some flowers in her new planter.............................I ran to the shop for some of the magical goo, and woulda put it on.........except she refused to be the cutting edge of medical research

I got her a bandaid, and mourned the lost opportunity to break new ground in emergency medical care.
