The hard stop with the clunk noise has me thinking planetary issue. Pull a plug and do a little magnet fishing.

Sorry I'm of no help, but I enjoyed your 55 gallon drum video. It reminded me of photonicinduction's coconut video...

That's how it sounds to me as well.

Hard to tell from the video... but it looks like the track stops before the sprocket... so While the clunking and stuff does sort of point towards a planetary issue I would actually loosen the track and see if the idler isn't stuck(shot) or maybe there's a rock lodged in there stalling it.

Definitely on the agenda - I figure either way, releasing tension on the track, and/or removing the track, should show the problem pretty quickly.
Hoping so anyway - I'm new to excavators and tracks and such

Re: ...and it's broken. Hitachi zx35u (or ex35u)
I just recently had a rock lodged between the idler and the bracket on my Cat 931B causing the track to stop when in reverse. I saw some gouging on the idler and closer inspection revealed the rock in-between the idler brackets and couldn't be seen. Had to reach in to feel it. Got lucky that after several attempts back and forth with the track lifted, part of the rock sheared off and I could get it out. If you can loosen the track enough to lift it off the sprocket could see if the sprocket turns properly on its own. Could check the idler as well.

Yep, I'm hoping for a rock or idler problem.

Lowest quote for replacing the seal is $900 + parts.
One place said 17 hrs labor or wants $9500 for a new one.
Online orders are looking like $2,000.
Tough to shop local this way.

Re: ...and it's broken. Hitachi zx35u (or ex35u)
Holy cow! Previous owner was playing "Swamp Monster" with a bad seal in some pretty soupy mud. (Ask me how I know...)
I really doubt that just a seal will cure that, My guess is all the needle bearings and planet pins are already gone, and the rest is following. A good used unit complete would be my choice for a part time machine. And I would be suspect of the motor seal too, it might be next, silt seems to get into everything.

It was used by a plumbing outfit in Fargo - very possible to get into mud over there.
I'll definitely be just ordering a complete unit and swapping it in. The repair costs are way too high for just the seal to justify having it fixed (more parts would be needed for sure).

Somebody got rid of that machine just in the nick of time, wonder what the other side looks like inside.

Re: *update* ...and it's broken. Hitachi zx35u (or ex35u)
If you're mechanically inclined you could probably rebuild it yourself for just the cost of the internal parts. I've done a couple of them in the past, but I'm not sure if they were quite as bad as that one...

I have owned several large Excavators... Once that much mud is inside a planetary, It's total junk. Trying to replace 80-90% of the internals is not going to happen for less than the price of a new unit and a whole lot more than a good used complete unit.

Correct, the old man retired (age 83) and sold all equipment to this employee.
He told me it was ready to dig no problem, sent him the pics and he thought on it overnight and offered to split the parts ($1000 each) since it could have just as easily happened to him the day before.
Very fair offer for an as-is exchange.
The other side was leak free but fluid needed changing - so I did. Sounds good when it spins.

Wanted to, parts were not available that I could find. The ones I did find made it obvious that people don't often fix these smaller final drives - just swap them. Money doesn't pencil out.

That's what I figured out after some searching.

Exactly what I'll be doing - only way to learn what is fixable and what isn't
I'm pretty curious how the wire will be able to go back in once the cover is pulled.

I used the machine several hours today - just put oil in the drive and went to work with it.
Nice digger
New drive gets here Wednesday from Texas final drives.

You might want to check the swing motor gear box also.... I don't know if that one is oil bath or not.... but just to make sure it has oil would be a good thing

Correct. My take on him when I bought it was he is an honest guy just trying to make a few bucks on equipment he bought from his boss.
He has proven that with his response and concern for the machine not being "ready to dig" as he assured me.

Re: *update* ...and it's broken. Hitachi zx35u (or ex35u)
People get old. People park a machine outdoors, five years later they feel it is good as it was when parked. Charlie Abbott was such a man. He ran a two man excavation company 60 years. At some point he lost his one employee, never hired another.
A man in his seventies, he fussed around on some jobs that weren't big, enlisting his wife for shuttle duty.
He never said, but I'd guess he failed a CDL physical.
The machines got old sitting around. He couldn't bring himself to part with anything. Machines didn't move for at least ten years.
Since Charlie's death, his brother made his widow a package deal offer, trucked dozens of machines from CT to VT. One by one Charlie's nephew has repaired to function, if not reliable condition, & sold them. They have a IH 175 crawler loader offered now. Tracks were new 20 years ago, only a few hours on them, but most pins are seized.
An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Likely what happened here as well.
Oh well, I've been using it while I wait on the new final drive (just put oil in this drive and let it leak out).
This was a huge broken down corral filled with rocks, boulders, garbage, oil jugs, metal, various "farm debris" and aluminum cans...and 7' tall weeds.
Now flat and empty Used the mini excavator to rake up all the crap into piles and dig out the rock/junk/boulder pile.
Bobcat got rid of it all.
The corral behind it is next, then keep prepping the property for sale. Sweetie is prepping/repairing the house, I've got the outside, shop and outbuildings.
