An alternator works when the field is grounded IIRC. If the regulator is faulty, it shows a ground constantly, and makes the alternator put out full power all the time. This, I believe, heats up the diodes in the alternator, and ruins it over time. Might heat something else up, but I'm not sure.

First thing I'd check is whether the alternator is putting out full charge all the time. Anyways, that's my take on it.

I think I'd look for a short somewhere too. Shorts make alternators put out full output too. Leastways that's what I think a short does to an alternator................I'm no electrician.

    Re: blt in oklahoma

I ended up with this machine in a pickup trade. rusted out fuel tank and corroded carb bowl and crushed hood and face. started working on what I knew (body work and engine). new mag and carb bowl and a donor tank, and it ran and actually struck an arc. was charging 13.5-14.5 volts at battery connection. pulled out to weld a plow hitch and fired it up and no arc. no charge at battery connections. new alternator and all was good again...but only for about 5" of a rod.

Thank you for the advice! I will be digging in a little more and checking stuff out.
