    Re: Frustrating people

    I have hard 220, 230 and 240 volts.
If you doing calculations it is 234 volts per most power companies.
Now if live so parts where 50 cycles it is 220 volts for home and three phases is 380 or 415 volts.

The good news I know what they are taking about.

That's correct. My CWB cert says FCAW on it.

Pretty sure everyone would agree there is no classification for Tig without shielding gas.

    Re: Frustrating people

I can't find anywhere in AWS D1.1 where aluminum was welded. no electrode or wire for alumium (AWS A5.10) can be found in this code.
however, in AWS D1.2 aluminuim is welded and it is mentioned here that aluminum must be welded with noble gas argon or helium and the group AWS A5.10 aluminum is discussed herein.
one of the welding processes we are talking about here is GMAW but none (MIG).
So my conclusion is that AWS has merged MIG and MAG into GMAW.

Whatever, you just don't get it. I'm only a hobbyist, welding is merely a means to the end for me to complete projects in building my dream home. I come to these forums and try to help people where I can, I offer them help. You come to the forum to prove other people wrong or make fun of them. Go ahead and make fun of me all you like, it won't bother me in the least, my skin is thick. If it makes you feel good, go right ahead.

This is exactly why this thread was created by you, you just don't get it. You act like a know-it-all on every topic, there's not too much you don't chime in on, which is quite interesting. Because how could a professional welder have so much time to spend on a welding forum, morning, noon and night, if they were welding? You must not weld very much, and that in itself says a lot.

You can make fun of me for trying to learn something, sure it was pretty dumb of me to think that the flux would create the shielding gas needed for Tig welding, but if argon was needed the process of using a stick electrode on DC doesn't make that much sense to me, I could just take my AC/DC Tig welder and do it right on AC. At least I tried it, something I wanted to do, and I knew I could use argon and do it, I stated that myself. But that defeats the purpose for me, as I have pointed out.

I have seen you make some foolish statements on this welding forum, and other welders have laughed in your face. That must really hurt someone that claims to be a professional welder, your peers don't all think highly of you if they laugh at you.

So next time your on some forum giving mechanical advice to someone, sitting in your arm chair and someone calls you out, don't run to another forum weeping for support, because that person was probably right, you probably didn't know what you were advising on and probably aren't qualified to even give advice. That won't stop you, folks like you are always willing to make a fool out of themselves, thinking they know better.

    Re: Frustrating people

So what are you doing coming on a different thread to call me out? Seems hypocritical to me. By the way several people agreed with me that the proper terms should be used when describing a wire feed process. That's why they have them... to avoid confusion. You could have just said you didn't realize you still needed argon shielding. It was a combination of everything you posted that sounded so obscure. It doesn't really make sense when you can use the proper Tig filler wire. I don't weld as much as I used to and am recovering from having shingles around my eye. It felt like someone stuck a stick in my eye for about a week. A few weeks later I still get aches around my temple and eye socket. At least the blisters and scabs have cleared up. Dr. said it could last up to a year. Not fun at all.

No, actually I see it the other way around. You had no business going into the other thread to call me out, that was your sole purpose.

I just commented in your thread that given the OP, it's no surprise.

You brought that thread up in this one for no reason other than to call me out.

I gave you an honest response. You're looking to call people out and prove them wrong. That's what you exist for.

    Re: Frustrating people

I would have responded the same to anyone thinking a stick electrode could be used with a Tig torch to eliminate the shielding gas requirement. It was just bizarre and didn't work as you found out. I've seen worse things done like a shop thinking it's perfectly fine to hard wire a 3 phase welding machine and connect a 30' extension cord for it using just Marr connectors and a little electrical tape. No junction box or anything else. Then have it running across the middle of the shop floor.

D1.1 is the structural steel code.
Not much aluminum is used in structural steel fabrication.

Gentlemen, this back-and-forth or tit-for-tat type of engagement is not very good reading (annoying and useless).

I recommend putting a sock in it and letting some stuff go.

If you don't like someone, try to not read their free advise/suggestions...

    Re: Frustrating people

    Well,
My two cents. You have to have give and take in the technical terms and open your mind to a possible broader understanding of the term. What's the difference between a whip and a lead? A stinger and an electrode holder? A work clamp and a ground? Straight polarity vs. DCEN? SMAW vs. MMA vs. Stick vs. Arc? (MIG and TIG could be called arc welding right?) The problem is that the industry has always been fluid in terms of definition and the way things are applied. Definitions have changed over time, and people are often caught between the two definitions and older terms and newer ones. S

MIG was sufficient to cover gas shielded wire feed until some Karen came along and pointed out CO2 became active under the presence of an electric arc so it was really MAG unless you were welding with pure argon, so they devised the name GMAW.

I had a customer the other day trying to use our flux-cored synergic setting for Dual shield and it wasn't working well with the settings it was giving. Yet he kept saying he was just flux-cored welding. But then something wasn't adding up, then I asked him if he was using Dual Shield? He said well he couldn't use anything else for what he was doing.

    There you go.
That's why you don't see any reference to aluminum in D1.1
I'm quite familiar with details in D1.1
I work under it with the Ironworkers.
In my structural background, I've never worked really with aluminum. It isn't common for the most part. I could see aluminum hand rail or the like maybe being a possibility in certain situations.

Some folks come to online blogs and ask questions that they already know the answers to. The problem is, many of them don't want to listen or believe the correct answers and they will argue till they hear what they want to hear.
