    Drop legs for trailer

Put some adjustable legs on trailer to help load equipment without lifting the rear of the truck off the ground. I've always had to make sure to hold truck down with loader or chock the wheels because the parking brake is useless when the rear is airborn. Truck would roll, trailer would bend, etc...

Figured it was time to fix my problem.

Materials: 2 7/8" oilfield tube, 2" galvanized pipe, 3" channel with trimmed flange, and scrap 3/16" plate for feet. I'm still learning mig and this was all done pulsed spray with ~C10.

See the bend in the trailer??? I don't think that was there when new! Anyone know how to straighten my pictures?

I'll let you know tomorrow; I'll be moving a 10k rocksaw around all week. The legs, when pinned all the way up hang under trailer about 4" (The same as the ramp compartment). Pinned at the height you see in the picture is 7" lower than stowed position, there is another hole 4" inches lower, and another 2" lower yet. I'll find the sweet spot this week where I can keep from jamming the legs where I can't raise them after loading heavy and still keep truck on the ground.

    Your welds look excellent

For loading, I use stacked 4x4 blocks then pull forward off them when loaded. For your legs, maybe a 2x4 would do the trick?

Been there... I used some 6x14 pine blocks for a while until they fell off the trailer on the way to pick up a skidsteer. Luckily one of my daughters was with me to hold the brake pedal while I loaded up.

When I would jam up I'd pull the machine forward to load down the tongue more, remove blocks, and then back machine up to proper position.

Looks good, I would add a handle to the foot to be able to raise and lower the leg.

    Re: Drop legs for trailer

That's a damn sight better than I can weld. Nice!!

With those legs you'll stop bending your trailer when loading something heavy over ramps hanging on the tail. I have the same setup, and it's great.

I didn't want to mar the trailer, so my setup is a small beam that goes under the main frame. Removeable, and stored for the few times a year I need it. Just a matter of chaining it to the frame to hang it while the jacks are slipped on, then raising the jacks to firm it up under the azz end.

Every time Princess Auto has a sale on the 5,000 lb. weld on drop leg jacks, I buy a bunch. I've been putting them on everything and I love them... much more stable than the rotating clip on style.

    Nice work.

Is there any way that you could use one screw jack at the center rear of the trailer, that either mounts or spins out of the way or can even be removed and stowed in a little storage box?

    Sincerely,

Most trailers have exaggerated bends, some slight bends but most are counter loaded. Once you load them down fully they are straight again.

It is, but I keep thinking his pulling point should be up higher, closer to the implement hitch, rather than prying against the pin when you pull it up the ramp...Hey Sam, did you have to add a center ramp for the hitch as well?

Ah I see, the pin could get bent if the machine hangs up.

I can see the point you guys make but in that particular position in the photo I like how the pull point actually applies DOWN pressure by leveraging on the tongue. Might be a moot point tho....
