    Infinity cube

Wish I had more time and used more clamps. But at least I got it done.

Still need to do some cleaning with the grinder. But yup, definitely learned my lesson to use some good clamps and magnets and to get better mitre cuts with the chop saw.

I sell those with glass and painted black for $300... with a waiting list. Buy your clamps.

    Very cool!

I've got some 1-1/4" square tube that would work for it, and need an excuse to buy some Fireball squares.

What dimensions did you go with? What are you going to do with it now?

I went with this calculator here:

    https://everythingmetalandwood.com/p...ty-cube-table/

17" on the long pieces and 15" on the short pieces.

I am going to powder coat this black and add a glass top to it. Just trying to figure out how to mount it.

My dimensions are 16 inches and 14 inches.. and my market has been word of mouth or a couple consignment shops near the house. I just shoot Chevy high gloss black on mine. Oriely's mixes it with the hardener cheap.

I stole the idea from here and made the first one for my wife... ahem I got to play and she got a table.

Go to the hobby lobby or whatever home depot might sell them... but the sticky bubbles are what I use. Wife gets them for me when I need more. Sorry no help on that but I do know they are cheap.

    Thanks Mac.

And I should also add. I used 1" square tube.

    Re: Infinity cube

I like 1.25... but 1.5 works well too... the tables in the house are 1.5. But they were also what I had when I started. 1 inch seems dainty to me. I know it will hold the load but I work with 2x to 12x at work too.. may be a bias

    ch4p,
just as a note about the design part of this project; a small variation would be to have the lower most (floor foot) and the top most horizontal frames even with the outside of the sides? This would make each horizontal frame larger by a couple of tube sizes but...

I think it would make for an interesting variation that would still be interesting to the eye?

    Cheers,

That would be interesting, I might try that out that next chance I get to build one of these again.

    Re: Infinity cube

Question for those that have built one. What kind of deflection have you seen in use? I know square tube has a pretty good resistance to bending but figure the side opposite to the legs attached to the base must droop some with weight on the table.
Edit - looking at the geometry again is it possible it compresses uniformly and acts like a spring so that the top stays relatively level under load?

    Re: Infinity cube

Tack the sides to keep it square until all sides are tacked together. Then weld it out. If you do the flats first then the inside fillets, and finish with the outside corners it stays square. And I haven't seen deflection if all pieces are tacked together before weld out, it does work against itself.

If you try the inside corners first then you see the deflection and it is a pain to fix. But weight not really as 14 gage is plenty stout for most coffe/end tables.

    Re: Infinity cube

Thanks Mac - I'll use that sequence. I was also wondering about deflection/stability after it is built. If you put something heavy on a standard table the legs are pretty much equally in compression and the load is reacted by the base or the ground. With this design, the load is carried by bending so I was wondering if there was any noticeable deflection.

Just read the entire thread . . . 'a grinder is not a primary
    metal fabrication tool'
    . . .

Before you build another - you need to build 'your welding
    skills 10X'
    - or you are just 'peeing in the wind' . . .

The higher your welding skills - the fewer clamps, mags,
and fixtures [corrections] you need . . .

Dressing a weld, can be correct - grinding a weld, means
    it is all wrong . . .

    Re: Infinity cube

So by looking at it I’m trying to figure out the best way to weld this up. If my theory is correct I would need 18 almost identical pieces metered 45 at the corners then weld up 6 sections of 3 pieces per section in the shape of a C. Then weld those 6 sections together. Does this sound about right?

So this is a hot ticket item for you huh?

this would be cool in SS or plain steel with blues golds oranges purples etc from tig welding and heating from a torch and then clear coated to show off the rainbow of colors and craftsmanship of assembly.

N2.... it is not a hot ticket, but a consistent. I sell 4 to 6 a month which is plenty for me. They are all 45° angles just laid out in different directions. I don't ship which cuts my customers down, but I don't care. I do not want the hassle.

I have some #4 finish stainless tubing left over from a job, I might ty to make one of these, although I'm not looking forward to the warpage that will happen with the stainless.
