    Cantilever Material Rack

I posted this in my thread about learning nr232, but thought some here may want to see the rack I built yesterday. 12" ibeam and some angle cross bracing. The racks are short and at a 1/12 pitch (they were drops from the roof the rack is under)

Kinda like after they killed Bonnie and Clyde, they were asked why they were shot 140 times and they answered, ‘because we ran out of bullets’.
I guess if its worth killin’ it’s worth overkillin’.

    Re: Cantilever Material Rack

I have one in my garage that has 5 times that amount of steel on it and the frame is made of 1/4 that amount of steel. Its been standing for 10 years now . It is 6 ft tall and has 7 places to put steel. I put the larger stuff at the bottom and store lighter steel on each rack as they go up. I probably have 2000 lbs of steel on it at least. It only has 2 verticals 6' apart and I put 10 and 12 footers on it.

Let's look at what they have in common. In way too many years haven't accomplished anything. Both afraid to leave the basement. Definitely the jibberish. Both are entirely full of shlt.

Gravity and mass. Heavier items at bottom. Of course it's not perfect but with some care it should do fine.

It's all good. The X bracing is a good idea. Many just use a stringer at top and bottom to tie them together.

Looking back at the sideways picture I can see where one would get the stucco wall impression. Lol.

Yes.................if one is a semi senile blathering old idiot

I stand in front of the refrigerator sometimes, and just look into the damn thing. I literally forget what I wanted out of the stupid thing. K'kins will tell me "sausage", "mustard", or whatever she knows I ought to be getting out of the box. I think she secretly enjoys it

I suppose that makes it really easy for someone to put words in your mouth.

Design and instructions for fixing up (or reclaiming) a trailer:

    1. Head down to the metal department (of your yard) and pull those short 4', 18", and 23" ibeam drops out of the weeds, tires and tin; there should be three of each.

    2. Cut 3 x 8' ibeams from that 24 footer stacked with all your drop-pipe.

    3. Weld together 3 vertcal sections of rack making sure that the angled cuts on the shortest pieces are against the longest pieces in such a way that material will stay put. Extra credit: Use a structural T8 wire that you've been practising--if you have the means, make it lifelike, i.e. weld it standing up.

    4. Place pieces level, 7' apart and parallel and weld in bracing.

    5. Remove that material from flatbed trailer and place on rack.

    6. Your trailer is ready to rehab (or go to work) and you've practiced a new process for structural work.

Is that the deepest beams you could get for the cantilevers ??
Cut those in half horizontally and add a few more .

When i run out of room that's the plan. Except I'll probably cut them in half diagonally to make triangles and use the pieces for more shelves.

    Re: Cantilever Material Rack

I don't think you can build racks too heavy eventually its going to be completely loaded and your going to be fishing something out of the bottom of the rack with a forklift, and will not fall over.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
