Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
I don't have time to read all 17 pages. Did it blow up or not?

So I thought I would sum this thread up for anyone not wanting to read it all.
Moto- Is my idea good?
Everyone- No, in fact it's dangerous
Moto- I actually don't care what you all think.

Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
It’s been holding 80 psi for a week.
-
Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
It's when it doesn't hold a given PSI that the problem starts

Man I get tired of trying to flush that crap out of systems. Had a Kenworth a while back that took bulk brake cleaner and 175 PSI air to get the cab and sleeper lines cleaned out... GRRR.

Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
I've used these Bimba reservoirs on vacuum systems that need a cleaning pulse for the filters. These are much lighter than the ones made from 2" black iron parts threaded together.
Last time I bought some they were under $50 (that was a couple of years ago, prices subject to change without prior notice, quotes only good for 30 days, YMMV)

I forgot I had a picture of what an aluminum 80 cubic foot scuba tank looks like cut in half. Here you go. The side walls are 1/2" thick while the top and "corners" at the bottom are over 1" thick.

Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
Why don't you just buy a small battery powered blower? You can blow off all your equipment and they are less dangerous and not any heavier to carry.

Re: Air tank build for cleaning chainsaw oil/fuel caps
does anyone know at what pressure an air tank that looses pressure from a leak become a rupture destructive leak or just an air leak? have there been studies on it? i have had probably 10 different type of compressors over the years bought used or given that developed various leaks and never exploded. some were rusted, couple were fittings failed. most were 175psi compressors.
just wondering?

It's not a given pressure but rather the material and the the weakness that is affecting an area. It's just like a tire. A dry rotted tire with cracks will blow out at a lower pressure than a tire with newer rubber that has been zippered.

It's just a roll of the dice I'm afraid. I've welded an air tank that was previously brazed (someone else).
I ended up cutting out 2 hand sized holes, one near each end, and welding in new material. Rust made them thin enough to poke holes easily with a chipping hammer.
I did that 15-20 years ago, never blew up thankfully.
Some tanks just zipper open and blow. Most just leak.

What kind of pressure do they hold?
