Welcome, bluechips!! Boy, you have worn a lot of hats.
Hi all. Here's a bit of an introduction:
I’m technically in retirement mode, but I’ve never been busier in my life. I always have more projects in the works than time (and sometimes cash) will allow, but at least I’m never bored.
I’ve worn a LOT of hats over the years, so I’m more of a generalist than a specialist. I did machine shop and fabrication work, auto repair work, and some welding during my younger days, then shifted gears into other fields, having worked in broadcasting, media design, technical writing, photography, teaching, and even archaeology (my late-in-life foray into higher education).
However, one thing has been constant throughout: I like to design, build, and repair things. I have a small home workshop with a smattering of machine shop and welding equipment, as well as a bunch of woodworking gear. My wife and I are currently restoring a 220-year old house here in Maine, and I’m also trying to finish the restoration of a 1954 Dodge M37, among other tasks.
I like to fabricate tools and jigs to help with our various projects, and welding factors into the creation of a lot of those items. I do NOT consider myself to be a “professional-level” welder, although I’ve owned and used a variety of welding equipment since I was about 14 years old, and I always try to do some research before embarking on any new welding task, so I have at least a basic working foundation in welding, and I try not to make too many blunders.
I also dabble in blacksmithing, and I've designed and constructed my own gas and coal forges.
I’ve lurked now and then on the forum, which has been a good source of information, and I thought I might try to become a little more involved with it, so here I am.
Cheers,
Blue Chips (aka, “Al”)
