Re: Stick welding a steel rack out of scrap pipe

Unless I have a project that needs long lengths, I usually get the 20 ft lengths cut in half so I can bring them home in the pickup. I have built racks somewhat similar to above (but not as pretty) to hold the long pieces (10's and 20's), it's all the short stuff that I find awkward to store and file in a manner that I can find what I need when I need it. I know we've been down that road before too, with members posting everything from pails to egg crate style holders, but it's still a pain...

Oscar, why don't you just drink it right out of the pot, then you don't have to wash the mug... Jim

I have a short stuff rack that is really just really heavy shelves with expanded metal as the "filler". Keeps the water draining through it. And, the beauty of the shelves................NOW I HAVE A VERY ORGANIZED PLACE TO PUT (throw) CUTOFFS THAT I STILL CAN'T FIND WHEN I NEED THEM

Oscar...............hats off for using that pipe. I can't really do anything good with pipe. I cannot weld round stuff worth a damn

    Thanks farmersam.

McCormick, when it all topples down, I'll be sure to fix it with a gusset and update this thread

in tension, hollow section has nearly the same strength as the same diameter solid section. It's basic college engineering.

in practice, you're nearly always better off going for a larger size hollow section, than a smaller size solid.

Oscar, good use of nasty old pipe
