    Steel Prices Increasing?

Metal suppliers have been telling me to expect a sharp rise in prices, anyone else hearing the same thing?

Although I don't really keep track of it too closely.................rolled steel is running somewhere around $900/ton right now. And, if the economy starts kickin'.......look for it to go higher.

But, if Biden removes the tariffs placed on imported steel by Trump, the price oughta go down.

Thing is..........there's still steel being imported into this country..........the consumer just picks up the tab on the tariffs (shrug). Tariffs are not charged to the producer........they're charged to the importer here in the US, and they pass the cost to you.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

The BMG Metals I use in Manassas, Virginia had price increases effective Friday, Jan 1. If I remember right, aluminum went up 9 cents a pound. I forgot how much the steel prices went up.

I received a few requests for projects on Saturday, Jan 2. When I called on Monday for a quote, the lady I work with said she was able to slide in the old price. Whether that is true or not, I don't know.

    I was quoted $3.28 a pound for a 48x96 sheet of 0.25" thick 6061.
The steel 1"x1"x1/8" square tube was $1.11 a pound.

I suspect Biden and Co. will lift the tariffs on Chinese steel, then pocket the difference to buy Chore Boys for Hunter, so ... no difference.

I just picked up about 700 pounds of steel the other day, we ordered it a few weeks ago... forgot to look at the invoice but most the guys we know are preparing for the 'wheels to come off soon!!!' and there has been plenty talk of price increases at some of our suppliers both steel and plastic...

There have been drastic increases globally in the price of hot-rolled steel — US$1,000 per tonne in the US, US$700 per tonne in Europe and US$650 per tonne in Asia — it said. China Steel has increased the price of hot-rolled steel sheets and hot-rolled steel coils for delivery next quarter by NT$1,500 per tonne.

I mostly use 16 and 20 gauge metal studs for framing. Supplier said all metal is up 30% and more increases to follow. They carry CEMCO metal based out of Canada with offices in the USA.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

I use mainly light gauge sheet for plasma cutting. Got a big shock today. 14 gauge from 55 for 4 x 8 sheet to 70 and 12 gauge from 70 to 98 per sheet. Was told to expect more sticker shock in the weeks ahead. Called a metal supplier closer to me and they wanted 92 for 14 gauge. Had to ask twice for the price as I thought they were quoting a heavier plate.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

Funny thing is.................all the steel around here comes from Mexico, comes up the inland waterway. https://www.swt.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation.aspx

So, the phony tarrif, and the "new" NAFTA, didn't do squat for this country. More crap, and we're payin' the price. We're paying the same price for Mexican steel as y'all are paying for (maybe, and I mean a BIG maybe) US steel.

All the pipe we been getting is USA got some galvy pipe a while back I think that was USA too or maybe canada... I do remember some korean labeled steel a few months ago.. but can't remember if it was square tube or large pipe??? I'll have to look at some of the scrap I got laying around.. but don't remember seeing mx stuff lately... I do remember it several years ago though...

EdIT: just checked my pics.... ooops last 6 inch pipe I picked up a week or so ago was korean... the times before that it was USA, I couldn't find a decent pic that showed the square tube... so I'll have to look at pieces when i get a chance..

My supplier said the same thing; expect weekly increases until at least the end of March.

    Re: Steel Prices Increasing?

Yesterday I was buying some 4x8 sheets of steel 14g and some 1/4" round bar.
My normal place had the 14g at $100 a sheet and the 1/4" was $2.75 a stick.
I checked around and got the following prices from different places.

    14G sheet - $111 from place No2, $141 from place No3, and $150 from place No4
    1/4 round bar - $8.25 from place No2, $4.65 from place No3, and place No4 doesn't carry it.

Seems like there ought to be a GLUT of material available, what with all the projects Sleepy Joe is "canceling" (Keystone Pipeline, oil & gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, etc etc etc)

Seems to me that steel prices should be coming DOWN due to dying demand, and the only thing going UP should be the value of Hunter Biden's foreign energy interests...
