Lincoln LF 74 Wire Feeder on 350 MPI?

Hi there,

I recently picked up both a 350 MPI and a MTS 3500 for a pretty good deal. I would like to run a Lincoln LF74 wire feeder on one of them. In reading old threads I gather that this combination is possible (thanks Brand X!). I intend to make my own cable. I have the pin-out diagram for the 14 pin Lincoln connector, but cannot find the detailed pin diagram for the Esab 19 pin connector.

Can anyone help me out on identifying which pins to connect up when making up my adapter cable?

ps - I am also looking for the high frequency tig starter box (EAS-IV) that was available for these machines if anyone has one available. . . .

Give me some time, and I will get the pin outs from the adapter I still have.

If you do find that box, be sure upgrade the fuse running the control circuit in the 350MPI.. They came undersized for that box. It will blow and you will think the high voltage box is dead. Don't ask me how I know that.. It's high voltage start,but similar to high freq start.

go to ESABNA web site. support tab, documentation then user manuals.
arc equipment, power supplies, multiprocess. 350mpi will be at the top of the page.
down load manual 15-481-K. go to page 43 to the machine diagram.
right hand side. labeled J1 is the pin call out for the 19 pin plug.
right in the center is the 115 and 42 volt circuits. don't mix them.
The LF74 runs on 24 to 42 volts. go to Lincoln's web site. support tab then parts.
open the service navigator and enter as a guest. place code number in the box and get access to the owners manual and more. print out diagrams and match up the plugs. so the welder can supply what the welder needs.
The only odd thing you will need to do is connect pin J1-V on the welder to pin c and pin I. This will allow 42 volts to go to the contactor control and return out D to J1-U
On the feeder C and D are contactor control and is a opto isolated relay.
I and K are the 42 volt input.(J12) to power the feeder.
on the welder T and U are 42 volts. V is the contactor return.
Ground connection to J1-D is not needed on a 42 volt system it is for the 115 volt.
You can also use the 14 pin plug and power it on 24 volts. same type of three wire system plug J2 Please check these instruction against the diagrams. before you make up your cable.

If you are going to use the electronic voltage box,(ft pedal too) it uses the 14 pin on the MPI.. So wiring the feeder to the 19 pin is best.It also will allow the LN feeders to run full speed when using on .023 wire.. Only downside to running that feeder on 24 volts..Which I do with a Lincoln to Miller 14 pin adapter running the LN-72/74 feeder. I use it on my Thermal-arc LM-200.. Great versatile feeders!

Thanks a lot for the feedback gents, appreciated. I actually had the full manual for the 350 MPI downloaded, but did not notice the wiring schematic has the the pin out!
I am waiting for my end connectors to arrive and then I'll give it a shot. I considered buying a cable at first and called the guys at Justarc. I left a message explaining what I needed. He called back and left me a message saying it was "impossible to make these European standard welders work with a Lincoln 42 volt feeder, and that in all his years of business he had never successfully done it" I found that interesting/amusing based on what I have researched here. . .
In any case, I'll tackle it myself and feed back my progress (or lack thereof) when I get all my parts ready to assemble.

Dea, from Just arc made my cable adapter for me..He just forgot..(LN-72 14 pin to Esab 19 pin) He also gave me Pin outs on building a cable for a 120 volt Hobart feeder 17A to the 19 pin Esab. ccawqc also came up with the same info on hooking up a 120 volt feeder to a MPI.

The 350 MPI was made in South Carolina , I believe the 3500 was made in Brazil.

Main thing,what you are doing is possible, and will work great when done.

I can see the Esab Aristo euro power supplies being impossible to get to work with the Lincoln feeder.. I bet that is what Dea is thinking.

Wow, that's a well outfitted welding cart very nice! Thanks for the info, it does seem Dea may have been mistaken on what I wanted as it was an exchange of messages vs a real conversation.

So I have started to generate a little diagram for my cable using the manuals for each machine. Is anyone on here capable of double checking me? I'm not really all that electrically inclined and some of the descriptions on the drawings are pretty brief. . . . In the Lincoln manual there is some detail on how to connect to a Miller power source and that was somewhat helpful. It does seem that there are a lot of pins I am not using though. It seems like L,M, U are impt on the Esab side, but I don't really know where they would go. . .

Brand X - I'd love to have your cable and spend a few minutes with a continuity tester to confirm what goes where!

Short of that though, can anyone have a look at my diagram and critique it?

Ok. I did see that it was 18/3 wire for the wire in your picture. Thanks for your help

the aristo feeder uses digital communication I believe. so it can only be connected to an aristo welder.
