I’m assuming this turns a hose or pipe fitting,
possibly a fire fitting. Dug it out of scrap
metal dumpster at work(don’t need it,
but had to have it). Anyone know what
sort of fitting it’s made for?

Fire hoses have a heavy brass swivel threaded connection. Two buttons stick out to put a spanner on.
An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Just seemed like there could be a better design for
    engaging with those buttons.

They are also for opening those valves you see on each floor of a high-rise, in the cabinet where the hose lives.
Do not believe everything that you think.

There are actually lots of 'different standards' for fire fighting equipment... I keep several different hydrant wrenches in my service truck for some of the different hose connections and hydrant fittings they use around these parts... I have at least two different kind of pinlug wrenches for the hoses and three wrenches for the hydrants for top valve and side stuff. also have a wrench for the smaller hose that just has the tabs... or whatever you call em

I think back in the day I had so many different hydrant wrenches in the water truck that there was no room for a passenger. And of course you had to protect the city's meter too, that $1000 deposit wasn't something you wanted to lose.

Yeah, different water districts have different rules for the 'meters' some let you rent/lease them plus the meter when you have em read it... others just charge a flat rate... some are ridiculously expensive so much so that a small operation could never afford one... so you find 'other' ways to get water

I only keep the wrenches in there for sentimental value as I'd never think of doing something illegal with them...
