Star Trek uses stick welders.
I知 kind of a treks. Watching ds9 I see Sisco stick welding what might have been pretty thi wall tubing with an ancient stick welder. . Any body even today any body can tig weld unobtanium even thin wall stuff. Now cutting a hole in an unobtanium door with a phaser g7n is ok but I知 sure they would have some kind of plasma cutter that would make a nicer cut than blasting half of the door all over the engineering department.there are huge electrical sparks and things burned up nut no soot is around and uniforms remain spotless.
Seven of 9 battles a hunter in the wrestling ring and her hair remains perfect even though she is knocked nearly unconscious. O達rien is using a plain old Jackson helmet . I知 sure there must have been auto dark lenses hundreds of years in the future. Tri orders are amazing. There are standard one then the special medical ones that heal the worst broken bones and burns.
It痴 fun watching this imaginary stuff from our ancient perspective.

Re: Star Trek uses stick welders.
I'm curious how they welded transparent aluminum??? Sparks look good on camera. Always thought it would be funny to go on a show like America's Got Talent and make some welding art. Turn the lights down and start off making a few sparks welding and then maybe a cutting torch, moving up to plasma on aluminum for the blue sparks. Then for the finale ask if the judges have ever felt electric current. Have them hold the cable while you proceed to weld at about 130 amps. Probably wouldn't feel much. Then make a slight adjustment, change the stinger, hook up an air line and proceed to gouge at 600 amps. Maybe I'm twisted but I think the noise, sparks and cable jumping would be a hoot and no one would hear the screaming.

Re: Star Trek uses stick welders.
Stick welding is a reliable process, even in space, even in the future.
Plasma conduits are made of 6 inch corrugated drainage pipe, so Im not sure how powerful it is in space.
7 of 9 has a huge set of rockets. When you have rockets that big you look good no matter what you are doing.
O’Brian is an idiot. He wouldn’t recognize a technological advance if it bit him in the ***. Plus, he couldn’t weld any better no matter what he was using for a hood.

Not sure where to get it but you can get some and try welding it different ways.

Re: Star Trek uses stick welders.
I noticed in the Stargate shows the Ships were made of a material many time harder and lighter than steel but you could always cut through a door or bulkhead with a tiny esab plasma torch.

"Transparent Aluminum" is sort of a thing. It's called Aluminium oxynitride.

Re: Star Trek uses stick welders.
there was an article a year or so ago that someday this stuff would be used for cell phone screens so they wont break, but the cost of the transparent aluminum was cost prohibitive at this time..

Welding in space is no picnic. Read up on it. Things don't behave as they do on Earth. Zero G and vacuum conditions complicate things. Electron beam or laser may work, depending on the circumstances. I wouldn't want to be dodging weld spatter in space.

Reminds me of an old Amos & Andy film where Kingfish (?) was trying to sell someone "imbisible glass".

Re: Star Trek uses stick welders.
I remember reading about transparent aluminum being used for bullet proof face shields.

I don't want to be dodging weld spatter anywhere.

Your are thinking of a zero gravity environment, these ships obviously have gravity generators, so no problem. When it is time for the overhead welds you simply reverse the polarity of the gravity generator. Duhh.

There is no need for over head welds in space, you just fly upside down

Good to know that in the star wars and star trek universe welders are alive and employed

This is one time you'd be glad when welding magnetic steel
