Torching cutting a 3 3/16 hole in one inch plate or hole saw both ?

I’m trying to make bucket ears for 80mm pins to go into which will be hooked on to buy a JCB quick coupler. On a Volvo ec210.

I wanted to get it done on a CNC plasma cutter but everyone around here is booked out too far to get it done.

I just torch cut some 1/2 plate with washer guides ehhh not very well.

Main goal is to not have to weld the pin in so they can be reused .

Cut most of it with torch then leave a bridge part going across and hopefully 1/16 small all around then finish with a hole saw to clean it up ?

Buy or make a circle cutting attachment for your torch. Cut it slightly undersize and clean it up with a flap disc in a die grinder. The flap disc won't remove too much material and being torch cut will make it a little harder on the edge. Use the mounting pin for a guide. There are several types of circle guides.

Get pipe or tube and sleeve it and cut hole to match. If 3" ID pipe is too small, cut it open and it should spring enough.
Check for a steel bushing that pin fits, make hole, and weld bushing.

Don’t try to ream it with a hole saw. The cut surface will have very hard spots in it and will just trash a hole saw. It will cut fine with a hole saw. Drill a hole at the cut line to give chips a place to exit. Use cutting oil, don’t overspeed the hole saw.

Other option was mentioned above, get some mechanical tube and weld it in the torch cut hole.

Drill a 1/4" hole where you want center. Holesaw from each side. Even if you only go in an 1/8" per side it will make torch cutting easier since you have a smooth edge to follow.

I like to use carbide hole saws, though i couldn't find any 80mm at Mcmaster/MSCdirect. Normally I would drill half way through one side then flip it over and finish from the other side. Much less binding that way, some bits don't clear chips or slugs as well as others.

That is what I would do also. Done many that way. I actually have bought those hole cutters at McMaster and they work well. Best cutting fluid is "Thread cut-Dark" as it has sulpher to help the teeth grab the material and pull it out.

I've had really good luck with Lenox or Mag-bit Bimetal holesaws just using a continuous air blast to cool and clear the cut. just wear a good face shield. Lubricant seen to jam them up tight. Just my experience.

have done MANY exactly as BD1 suggested, as a bonus on outside ya can leave a little extra sleeve material sticking out to act as a protector for the pin, have used this method on many excavators, backhoes, dozers and ALOT of front end loaders

If you're going to use a bushing, A split tension bushing might be a good idea and no welding required.

I wanted perfect surface, so I did it on a lathe. When you weld them they won't be perfectly aligned anyway. You'll then have to heat straighten, or ream to get perfect fit.

Might it work for you to buy DOM tube, use it as your pin surface. Weld it into larger holes in your ears.

An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

I could have CNC cut this for you I am in CT. The last project I did before my Dad passed was make bucket ears for his Case 580 to fit a bucket he got. I cut them out on the table and bored the holes on my Bridgeport.
