There’s quite a few farmers on this website who contribute great ideas and insight.

Farmersammm for example shares his welding and machining skills and is kind enough to put them into short story form

Whtbaron’s posts I always enjoy,as he farms with way bigger gear than the puny row crop farms here in the west. His cold weather rants make me a little smug but I just can’t help it.


There are many others and I often feel a little left out but am happy to be able to make a farmer contribution.

Yesterday I bought a Miller (light weight ) welding jacket (on sale for $30 usd) to replace my tattered and ripped one.

They have this annoying Velcro collar so I removed the hook and loop strips. Rather than cut the extended remaining tab I folded it over and stapled it.



Staples touched up with black nail polish.








Done.

Those staples aren't rusted, bent, previously used - then hammered kinda straight.

Nice hot shower.

Did a bit of farmerizing myself today

Got back to the shop and had some free time so put it to good use working on the spreader!

One of the squeeze handles is missing that releases the locking pins for sliding the control levers up/dn... here is the one on the left lever I'll use to copy

So I had a piece of quarter inch plate in the back of the truck I cut out a rough shape of the new handle and put some holes in it then added a bump of weld on each side to keep it in place.

It just slips in from the side then a bolt/wire/twig... holds it in place

After that was more or less done... I started in on the control rod, used a piece of tension rod from fence gates put a Z bend in one end to go into the new handle and did some bernzomatic open forging on the other end to flatten it and punch a hole there.


Unfortunately the cel phone quit saving my pics.. or something I'll have to retake some pics tomorrow....

Well... back to farming and farmer contributions. I had to rebuild some hydraulic cylinders from a cultivator and the depth stops for the 2 center wheel cylinders were junk. My buddy at the dealership (yes, I have friends at an IH dealership too) said they were "stupid expensive" so I took his word for it and decided to make a couple. The originals were little more than sheet metal so it was time to move to something more substantial. some 3/8 flat stock got the nod.

I'm still getting used to having attachments to hold things straight and solid.... I like it....

I think the finished product turned out well... definitely sturdier.
