80 cf argon cylinders from eBay?

My LWS's (Matheson and Airgas) sells 60 cf gas cylinders for more than $230 each, and I noticed that eBay has new 80 cf for $205, including delivery.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/80-CF-WELDI...1&isGTR=1#shId

More than 900 sold and 99% positive reviews.

Anyone on WW purchased/used these cylinders?

Airgas will, Matheson will not because 80’s here are not ‘standard’.

60’s and 125’s are the most common in my area.

That's good to know. I have a total of 3 separate 80's I've bought from Arc3 gases formally Arcet. I'm not sure if they will or not. Will Matheson or air gas fill a 125?

Are the E-bay cylinders filled or empty? If the cylinders are legitimate customer owned cylinders anybody should be able to fill them but if they aren't a common size for that welding supply will have to wait for them instead of exchanging them.

Just remember one BIG THING! It’s going to cost you nearly as much to get that little bottle filled as it will for the full size bottles in my experience . It adds up ,particularly if you are stuck dealing with an outfit like AIRGAS. Sorry, but I just have to mention those evil #$@& when someone brings up gas bottles.
Do be careful buying bottles online as they may not fill them so Check first where you’re planning on doing business.

Re: 80 cf argon cylinders from eBay?

Exactly. You don't want a 80 unless you need ease of mobility. Small tanks end up costing within a few dollars of a several sizes up in tank size.

Consider a 125 cu ft as the minimum you would want to look for.

You can get used tank from pawn shops, craigslist and many other sources a lot cheaper. New tanks accomplish nothing when they are just going to swap it out anyhow.

I have about 7-80's, 10-125's and 7- 250's and never paid more than $100 for any of them except one of the 250's I gave $125 to a pawn shop for it. All purchased second hand and never had a issue getting any of them exchanged at any one of several gas suppliers I have accounts with.

If it has a name on the neck ring you just grind that off as better than 75% of the tanks out there nowadays are grind offs. They can't say nothing when more than half of their inventory are grind offs. Trying to find blank or customer owned neck rings on 250 tanks is nearly impossible lately and if you want gas you have to take what they got or drop yours off and wait a week for them to send out, fill and return.

This right here is about the best advice yet

125 is the biggest homeowner tank ive heard of . It’s also the biggest that you can typically get filled at most places.

That varies with location. Around here many places will sell you 330 bottles...I've got half a dozen and I don't have a commercial account anywhere.

Danielplace... You said to grind it off ???

I can't believe anyone would take that in exchange.
That would be rejected immediately at any of my suppliers.
I have "owner" cylinders. No name on neck and smooth . I exchange these for other owner tanks, plain neck, with my suppliers .

Re: 80 cf argon cylinders from eBay?

    Thanks for all the replies.

A 80 CF is my choice for mobility reasons, and, based upon my AirGas pricing for 100% argon, the 80 CF is the most economic:

    Ar 125 cf @ $314.78
    Ar 80 cf @ $133.11 <===
    Ar 60 cf @ $177.00

A 80CF is not a 'standard' size in my area - hence why I shall purchase and re-fill using my own tank - but AirGas will fill it.

    AirGas pricing is weird!

Re: 80 cf argon cylinders from eBay?

I just called Arc3 (formerly Arcet) to see what they do in my area. They will not fill any customer owned tank bigger than 80cf. They will lease a 150cf or 300cf for 75$ a year, same price for either size.

80cf refill price is $45 for C25 or 100% Argon
150cf refill price is $69.43 for C25 or 100% Argon
    300cf refill price is $102.25 for 75/25 and $91 for 100% Argon

The 80cf tanks if not purchased from them and I assume all fillers, must have a DOT stamp or they won't fill it. He said sometimes the smaller chinese made tanks don't have that DOT stamp on it and they have run into that. It is unfortunate for me that ARC3 is the only supplier in my area, as I would benefit from a 150cf tank, but not sure the yearly rental is worth it at least for me at this time.

    Huh?

    I have a 150 and I'm a homeowner.

$50 to $57 (depending on which LWS) to fill vs $40-46 for an 80.

    Airgas are way too expensive.

Re: 80 cf argon cylinders from eBay?

Air gas bought out my guy. They will exchange my tanks, 80,125,150 ,and 300.
No problem. The problem is how expensive they are.
I drive 35 miles one way to avoid Air Gas.
I take a bunch in and with fuel costs it's still cheaper.

You think these two are blank rings. Look closer. The C25 just came from Praxair and the Argon just came from Matheson after waiting 3 weeks for them to find me a customer owned tank to swap me for so I could get some gas.

Not sure how my phone pic are going to show them but they are both sloppy grind offs. The all have more of these than they do blank or "customer owned" neck ringed cylinders.

Doing good though as the rest of my stash appears to be legit. This is a recent problem I see at all the suppliers. Trying to retain your customer owned cylinders is getting ridiculous.

That's more than weird! It costs me $70 to refill (swap) a 330 tank with 100% argon, 75/25 or 90/10 (all I have done lately). I've had multiple 330 tanks hydro tested, new valve and a fill for $100 out the door.

Here in NJ most places wont fill anyone else tanks. Even grinding off the ring has no effect because they only fill certain names. I do have 1 company who does it "on the side", but I have to buy bottles around here.

That sounds odd. Only filling certain names when they are all owner bottles is a strange deal.

What about blank neck rings. You say you have to buy them. They shouldn't really have a name if you are buying them then it shouldn't matter because then they should be blank or "customer owned" on the rings.

Owner bottles should never really be purchased with company names on them. Even if it is the gas company your dealing with. Pretty much means it is their tank then and not even really owner bottles at all.

As long as they are filling them at a good price and no lease/rent charges but what if you have to go somewhere else. Those bottles with their certain names on them will not be fillable/exchangeable anywhere else.

Strange rules to play by there.
