Yea... I was looking at that sketchy area below the plate too.... might have been welded... but that logo is soooo pretty....and have you noticed the price of wood stain and varnish lately??

Hadn't noticed that sketchy area. Sure looks like some not-so-good weld bead that's been ground down.

I'll have to research to see if AnH anvils were cast iron like the Vulcans. If they have a wrought iron body, they'd be simple to fix, but nothing in my life works out to be simple!

A pipeliner bought the power hammer and that was his pickup.

The rack was steel and well built. The hammer was strapped DOWN well but being tall it was nice to be able to secure it at topside also.

It is never too early for SPAM. Chop it into little pieces and mix it with some scrambled eggs, make slabs and put it on some toast, etc

Well, the water filling wasn't working too well - in better part of 2 days, I managed to get 1/2 a cup into it...

So, crossed my fingers and grabbed the portaband and went at it.


Yes, I wore a respirator while working on this - no idea what this is - I've heard it could be asbestos, balsa wood, or? I left it in for now since it's hard as a rock, flipped it over, and cleaned up the bottom.


May throw a chunk in the fire pit and see what it does.

But I have a stump now - and it doesn't ring a bit lol!

Ok... but can you show me how to do that so that the top is in the same profile as a Model A fender? When we're done that, I'll need a second one to fit a 28 Whippet...

That's gorgeous, Shootr. Never would have guessed that water wouldn't penetrate the stuff. That means the pores have to be smaller than a water molecule, I think, and that's pretty dang cool!

The depression on the top is simply divine. You'll be able to make all sorts of neat things on that, especially if you add some outriggers for hammering different shapes like in the video.

What are you going to do for a base? Gonna put it on wheels?

Can't wait to see what's next!

I just wish learning to use tools was as easy as making them. Just enjoying the ride.


Whatever is inside doesn't burn, but the leftover acetylene/acetone played heck with the welding beads. I pushed through to seal it up completely so it wouldn't stink anymore.

Don't know what kind of tool that might be.

As heavily built as it is.... I don't think it's some kind of wedging device to hold something vertically. That's just a whole lot of work/time/material to go through for something like that, especially when you consider jut how small the "jaws" are. You wouldn't get much bite on anything big.

Talking about tools, I just ran across a video that has what might be my new favorite style of Swage block!

If you've been pondering a swage block as much as I have, you've likely gotten a bit fed up with seeing cast iron blocks filled with holes you don't need. Even worse is when they've been broken and chipped from ages of use.

I know a fellow who had his swage block cut out of mild steel, which I thought was great, but the price tag for that is dang near astronomical. It's certainly out of my budget!

Well, thankfully, Adriano Pasquino has come up with a very neat idea that I can thoroughly approve of.



Made from mild steel, it'll last plenty long and be easy to weld up if you run into any problems. The bolt channels do eat up some real estate, but that's a small price to pay when you consider how easily you can just make another swage block with different holes. I think too often folks get tied up in the idea of having a lot of options in one block, to their detriment. 99% of the swage blocks I've seen in shops are collecting dust. Maybe they get used as a place to store stuff. Rarely are they actually used for what they were designed for.

Part of the reason for that is that the holes and perimeter shapes don't suit what you want to make. While just having the mass to back up your sledge strikes is nice, it comes at a cost.

One of the reasons why I haven't bought a Salt Fork or Holland swage block is because I just don't want the hole-pattern they've decided is good for them. They might be nice, but watch a few videos from John Rigoni and see how often he uses the swage block he had custom cut for his particular projects. It makes a world of difference, let me tell you!s

A 20' length of 2"x2" mild steel bar is going to set you back a few dollars, sure. Maybe you can find some shorter lengths somewhere, though, and I think it's well worth thinking about.
