Welding a Trailer

Actually, and this isn't in defense of any particular position, the welds on commercial trailers suck. I mean SUCK. But, because there's a lot of redundant weld, it works(shrug)

Same with most things. I see stuff that I absolutely know was done by certified welders, and I'm amazed at the crap work. Structural stuff subject to inspection.........crap welds. I mean it's depressing, and it's why we're evolving into a 3rd World Country. Be honest, look around out there, and see if I'm not right..........the work product sucks for the most part.

Back around 1990, I worked at a business that took the machine shop out of a 30-40 foot tall building.

A firm was hired to add a mezzanine,, (2nd floor),, the mezzanine was to be new offices for 100 degreed mechanical engineers.

Well, you can just imagine the scrutiny that the new structural steel received,,
each day, the joints were computer modeled, deficiencies discussed,,

Welding?? WOW,, the welders were slobs, undersized welds, undercut, on,, and on.

Reports were sent to upper management about safety concerns,,

NOTHING was ever changed,, and,, nothing ever fell,, so, who was right??

In 1989 the fire department I was a member in bought a new truck, the truck was beautiful and all the welds that were visible on any of the aluminum body, or aluminum deck plate or other brightwork were beautiful, BUT if you crawled underneath for anything & started paying attention to the welds you would have thought they were done by someone that had just started welding, they were horrible, big globs of weld metal, joints with very little fusion or just plain UGLY welds.

Ahahaha, anybody seen yota pickup prices lately? Clean obd0 and 1 trucks are stupid money now. Sorry not sorry, someone brought up toy trucks and I just had to keep this going lol

I've built a few small trailers and they came out just fine.

Inspection comes from the inside not what shows on the outside. Sadly a lot of stuff that should have a lot better quality control doesn't and they get away with it. Workers aren't without blame either. Take SOME pride in your work.
