Maybe someone reshaped one end of a 3-4 pound driller's hammer head.

Would removing some metal half way back on the square side help to balance it, or would it need to be shortened as well? Probably lose case hardening if you did.

If they did, they sure spent some time at it. It does look a little funky, but not really home made...

It might be a top tool rather than a hammer.

There's some contention in the smithing circles whether these kinds of tools are hammers of an odd design or a handled top tool meant to be struck with a sledge.

That would make sense considering the length of the square body. More conducive to being struck as being swung.

You see them mentioned in some of the older books, mostly in context with big industry. If I had one like that, I'd lop off at least an inch from the struck end just to make for less mass to move since I don't have a striker or power hammer. If you have an apprentice to swing a big sledge, top tools like that make a lot of sense.

It would be handy to have on the rack, that's for sure. It's one of those tools you don't need often, but when you do need it there isn't anything that works better.

It would appear the best plan atm would be to hang it in plain view for use as is or modify if and when the occasion arises.

$12 Cdn. More than I wanted to spend but I thought it would look nice cleaned up and mounted on a mini block of wood for my bookcase shelf with blacksmith books.

You did alright on the anvil... the new Chinese ones at Peavy Mart sell for around the same price I think. Your antique will obviously have better rebound and a nicer shape...

Nope. I just gave it the bounce test. …25% rebound. Slightly better than my concrete floor. LOL

I started to make myself a new bracket out of some scrap for my recip saw. Part way in I decided what I really needed was a narrow horn to form it over so I grabbed some scrap and went to town on it.


At first I was going to make it to clamp in a vise, but then I decided I didn't really want to break another vise, so I made it to fasten to the upright anvil. Looking at the anvil made me realize I needed more brackets on it to hold my hammers. A wise man once told me it was easy to make one bracket, making 2 the same was a lot harder. I agree...


After making the narrow horn, it didn't seem proper to leave the ends rough, so like a true anvil I cut one end off straight and rounded the opposite. I thought I was doing a good job until I stepped back to look at my creation. No dildo jokes, dildoes. ***** envy will get you nowhere.



Of course it's not going to be in use all the time, and it was looking like a nasty ankle biter for hanging around, so I had to make a new bracket on the post anvil for storage.



Eventually I even managed to finish the bracket for the recip saw. Ahhh.... senior moments... brain farts. Oh look... a squirrel....

You could also make a forming die for your hydraulic press.

I've been watching Brooklyn's brake build and thinking about how many attachments could be built into it.... another project I don't have time for. I really need to get those 60 shanks out of the shop and I'm not enjoying it...

I seen that part being made in Fresno back in 1970's.
Odds are it made in China now. $1.50 a day to make the part.
In Fresno today min wage is $15.00 per hour.

Going back to the hydraulic press… I use a piece of 2” round to achieve a relatively usable 1” radius bend for hangers. I find I use this one the most.







I can block/space the receiving male section of the die to accommodate the different material width(s).


I have bigger radiuses also for “bumping” curves
