Mask off and make the bill/head a bit darker with Ospho or some other chemical darkener, then clear coat the whole thing.

I have never thought of hood ornaments. I will say that recent small boat project reminded me why I don't do very small or detailed work.

my comments are encouragement about the lines of the water bird form piece.
First, the neck has a few undulations that could be 'cleaned' up to accent the single long form OR.... swans and other larger birds have a couple of curves in their flying extended necks that might be explored here, to give other species room in this series?

Next, a tail, almost all of the birds in these groups have a tail of some form and that might be added to your form to give a continuation of the 'spine line' or the back of the piece where your main form line shows?

Now a detail for the beak. This area of ducks, swans, geese and related birds have some very attractive and sweet lines- they remain for you to explore them a bit more in detail? I think the head to beak curve transition in your original (of hoped for series?) shows a 'vagueness' in the head to beak curves' transitions? I suggest you might explore the difference of these groups of birds more in this head profile area. That shorter curve offers an 'end' to the overall flowing lines of the form - and is worth further development.

The base, might be made of 'feet' forms? That is, not unlike a folded 'metal leaf' the water birds' web feet, when folded for flight might make the 'bulk'/majority/major mass of the curved rod you've used and become a more natural flowing shape for a connect to the base.

These forms (which I hope you spend more time developing) might have a 'water surface' as though the bird were settling in/landing in a watery surface? Your rounded base might become a mottled surface or even a 'landing wake' of the webbed feet as landing gear!

Last, the wings can be in other attitudes of flight? There are many (MANY) possibilities in this series of forms you've opened up (IMO) and they're very clean, elegant and nature inspired forms of real beauty.

What about a 'bare steel' finish except for some heat coloration of the drake Malards' blue patch of wing or ' green head'? Snow geese have black patches, with white remainder? Lots of birds coloration could be in pairs- where the females are bland, earth tones, like a single matt patina- but the males have highly colorful single patches?

That brings up doing these forms in pairs? with wings in separate phases of stroke, but remaining harmonic of one another?

Thanks very much for posting your concept piece, and I look forward to dozens of iterations as you explore the form.

May I suggest you look up a copy of "Prairie Wings" by Edgar Queenie? Alibris.com is a good source for this classical study of ducks in flight and could be a good source of ideas for poses, and wing forms?

Thank you as always for the honest critiques of my work. As mentioned initially, I did not intend on making a bird. I thought I was going to make an abstract flame shape. It just kept looking like a bird as I worked on it. Where I made a major mistake was not stopping and looking at actual birds or sculptures of birds to see how to improve the shape. While the general shape might have been there, the problems you pointed out should have been obvious if I put it down and took a coffee break. I know of several other errors I made in this that are only visible when it is in hand.
Just plowing ahead is not always the right way and I am guilty of that when inspiration strikes. I even counselled shootr to step back from his work and look at it. Yet here I am doing exactly what I counselled against.

This morning I used farmer sam's technique to lengthen a lag bolt. A customer bought my "Eye of Storm" piece the other day and waited until last night to tell me how/where it will be installed in his yard. He needed longer anchors since he had softer ground at the site.

Here are the bolts and then the sculpture in place. This person had an absolutely gorgeous modern house. If you look on the left you will see a silhouette of a dog. That is a memorial for one of their pets. They had seen the picture of Donner next to this piece and that helped to decide to buy it.

I too have used the farmersamm method of lengthening round stock.

Perfect for in-field repairs but going forward I'm hoping the farmerlis method will perform equally well in the shop.
