    Champion 10000 won't shutoff

Welder works as it should. Kohler ch20 engine starts, runs , idles up and down but wont shut off with ignition switch. When switched to off position it goes to high idle!

It may be the switch, look at drawing if you have one but I think it shorts it out. I had one on a briggs linc do that a while back.

Is high idle integrated into the off switch?

Sounds like you have a multiposition rotary switch or toggle switch. Pop the switch out open it up, douse it in CircuitSafe, LectraMotive, or some other electronics cleaner that has a cool name (the cool name is important). Isopropyl alcohol would work, too. The idea being to wash away any contamination and to displace any water that may have made it into the switch.

Could be as simple as that.

It goes to high idle because the 12 volts have been shut off... Ergo no power to the idle solenoid, the ignition switch probably also incorporates a magneto ground thats not working, I could be wrong but it's worth checking out.

    Sounds right to me.

Kinda hard to diagnose something over the interwebs with out a lot of detail.

If it is a Kohler check the solenoid on the carb bowl. I'll bet it is stuck open.

    I never use switch.
I turn off fuel so no fuel in carburetor.

What he said. The Kohler version cuts off fuel in the carb to shut the unit down rather than grounding out the ignition as is the case with the Onan and Robin models.

The welder won't shut off because you aren't done yet. Get back to work...

    Re: Champion 10000 won't shutoff

Kohler will go to high idle as part of the shutdown routine. It's perfectly normal.

However............if it goes to high idle, and doesn't shut down..........it's the fuel shutoff solenoid.

I've gone over this here before, and folks always try to say it's not right........until they see a properly working unit go to high idle as it shuts down. It's the way they're made, or the way the board is programmed.

Follow the video to the point he shuts the 250GXT down. Yet another repeat of the video for the non believers.

The shutdown occurs at 11:29 in the video. If your machine goes to fast idle, but won't shut down.............idle solenoid

Yep, my daughter is constantly calling or texting me to diagnose something on their van, and it always starts with "what causes". Her husband almost got a a VERY painful lesson while charging the AC with one of those "NO GAUGE" charging hoses, he was holding the can and saw the bottom bulge, then the can got hot, he got the valve closed, but I hope they understand how close he was, turns out he overcharged it.THAT'S WHY I HATE THOSE CHEAPIE CHARGING KITS, hell nowadays you can get a cheap manifold set for what one of those kits cost.

I've been charging trucks left and right for the last 3 weeks, if they just need a topoff I just recover what's in the system, inject new oil to make up for the oil my machine stole, program the amount of 134 they take and push a button. Perfect "freeze your toenails off" cooling every time. Tried topping off a Peterbilt using the pressure/temp method awhile back, it took 45 minutes to get it cold.

The tractors seem to need a little puff every 3 yrs or so.... any more than that is usually an indication of a leak.
