I have him go side to side, hold on the edges for a split second to fill / make the weld flat. I also have him watch about 3/8” to 1/2” below the puddle to see how the puddle lays. If the puddle doesn’t lay right, change the rod angle up or down. To get the puddle to lay correctly.

Just an update. Grandson called yesterday afternoon. Said he got the call; he is going to be hired in the local Navy shipyard. As a welder’s helper. Said they will send him the paper work within the next two weeks, but has no idea when he will start working. He is still going to welding school at Olympic College in Bremerton Washington.

There are different methods to weld different types of metals. Actually, it takes time to become proficient and consistent. The work field is the place where you really learn to weld. My 11 yr old does some good stuff but he really still doesn't have the dexterity it takes. He is smart enough but consistency and pattern is still a problem, spray paint, pressure wash, welding and cutting.
