I have him go side to side, hold on the edges for a split second to fill / make the weld flat. I also have him watch about 3/8” to 1/2” below the puddle to see how the puddle lays. If the puddle doesn’t lay right, change the rod angle up or down. To get the puddle to lay correctly.

Just an update. Grandson called yesterday afternoon. Said he got the call; he is going to be hired in the local Navy shipyard. As a welder’s helper. Said they will send him the paper work within the next two weeks, but has no idea when he will start working. He is still going to welding school at Olympic College in Bremerton Washington.

    Re: Learning to weld.

There are different methods to weld different types of metals. Actually, it takes time to become proficient and consistent. The work field is the place where you really learn to weld. Moreover, Mig welding in easy to get into, but there are hard parts of it but Tig welding is definitely the hardest one. So, you want to get into welding but you don’t know where to begin. Well, no worries here are the some best welder for a beginner is AHP ALPHATIG 200X 200 AMP WELDER, ESAB 0558101694 MINIARC WELDER, and LINCOLN ELECTRIC 140C MIG WELDER. Moreover, all the above welders allow you to experiment with different materials and different thicknesses.

    Re: Learning to weld.

My 11 yr old does some good stuff but he really still doesn't have the dexterity it takes. He is smart enough but consistency and pattern is still a problem, spray paint, pressure wash, welding and cutting.

You can't blame your grandson for having trouble starting the arc. The guy in your signature has been trying for years! Hoping you see this and we can catch up.
