    Scrap metal art or projects

A lot of the art or projects I make end up being made from scrap metal. I have lurked here for a while before joining and "borrowed" a few ideas. I thought it would be nice to return that favor and post items I have made so others can see them and borrow as well. Please feel to post any of your scrap art or projects.

Trebuchet my son and I made when he was in middle school, he is an Army Officer now.

I don't really like this enough to hang on the wall. It was My very first weld project. Lots of ugly and thick butt welds. I was going for some multi tiered thing with stand offs, maybe I'll add to it I don't know. Went back in the scrap pile.

Wine bottles should be angled downward. I'm told we don't want our corks drying out. That being said, we don't drink but I do use wine for cooking and the few bottles I have on hand are stored standing upright and I've never noticed any problems.

    Your Pterodactyl is awesome.

SWells> I'm pretty sure I've seen a photo of your eagle before. Spectacular!!! Absolutely spectacular.

Seawalker> That's a very good first project. Much better than mine. You should take that out of the scrap pile and find a prominent place to hang it.

Equilibrium, Thanks I had a thread in the machining section about trying to drill the holes in this. While I put these holes at about a 5 degree angle, it wasn't quite enough.

Thanks to everyone for their posts. Please add more, there is some serious talent here and even if you may not think much of it, people like myself enjoy seeing others work so we can push ourselves to get better.

I'm an entry level weldor and don't get to the machining threads... too advanced for me. I missed that thread. Was anyone in a position to offer a suggestion for correcting it? Just curious.

Thanks. I have sold over 100 bells so far so I will dig up some pics of the better looking bells and post them in that thread. I also made a video for Youtube showing the different sounds of steel versus aluminum bells and different strikers.

As far as an idea for the rims, have you thought about burying them halfway and using them as the basis for a sea serpent humps?

The stick man pushing the rock up the bookend is very creative.
    --
While a sea serpent is a cute idea.... I don't know that burying rims half way in the lawn would work by me. I'd probably trip over them and break something walking around in the yard after dark. I'm thinking you must live where it doesn't snow or if it does.... you don't get any accumulations worth mentioning. By me, we can have drifts that are so high we can't see out our front windows. Combine that with a dog that can't be let out unless he's on a leash since he likes to supplement his diet with birds and squirrels and stray cats and I'm pretty sure that if I didn't break my leg running into them after dark during the warmer months..... I'd for sure run into any humps walking that dog in snow.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

These aluminum sculptures were made entirely from weld metal, with no grinding. The filler rod used was given to me from an electrician who ripped some aluminum electrical cable out of a building. I cut and removed the plastic wire sheathing, and the inner wires were 1/8" rods. Perfect for these!!

The first one is a tropical hut and a palm tree. The second one is a Mexican guy sleeping up against a cactus, while his donkey waits for him to wake up...

This one is also weld metal only. It was made with the same aluminum electrical wire as my other ones. I looked at my own hand, welded a little, looked at my hand some more, then welded some more, etc.

Steelsurgeon - Your work is great. Is that regular aluminum electrical wire? Do you have any idea what alloy it might be? I have a decent amount of it that is pretty heavy gauge but did not realize it could also be used as filler.
