Looking to Start a mobile welding repair busisness

I would not think usual road wear would impact/damage a lathe any more than routine/real use?

Lathes are generally pretty tough, unless they get placed on inadequate bearing surfaces - they need solid, flat, level, hard surface supporting them. They need to be out of the rain, the sun, and the dirt. Mine is easily 70 years old, and I bought it cheap - the x-axis feed was bad. Tore into it and discovered a loose setscrew on a gear. Tightened it, and restored all functionality.

The bearings are smooth, the ways are flat and true, none of the controls are bent or missing. No rust, no dried out seals, no electrical issues. No tweaked parts, dented covers, twisted or cracked castings. I'd like to keep it that way.

Some comes from my construction background.
I was out town with father and someone missed drill parts. I guy pulls job sit look work all he had a Lincoln welder and bottles. He could had about 6 hours of work if had drillpress. We had with hand drill.
On next job a used a handdrill and grinder to turn bolts to size.

FYI Our jobs where 8 to 20 hour round trip to shop.

When you work long distances from your base, you have to carry more - that's for sure. But that has very little to do with the OP. He's a long way from taking on jobs big enough to justify two hours on the road.

BTW, could you give me a hint on that first sentence? It like just like a transmission it do for with dog. I'm totally lost....

I was about 14 at time had 15 minutes to packed. We did have a torch and a electric welder on job site.
No hand saw, I had cut 2x4 to cut with hand grinder.
I learn quickly what bring like screwdriver, hand saw just to name few things.

I could go on , but gets worst from there my first time field.

I am will to put what ever money I need to in this business to make it successful. Be it I have to save ever penny I find on the floor eventually with enough saving and time I will have a pretty decent rig truck and welder.

I am going to keep practicing welding with the stick welder I have. There is always room for improvement in my skills. I have time to learn if anything. I could not attend welding school when I was in highschool due to circumstances beyond my control I'm pretty much self taught. So I have to keep learning what I can to get better.

Maybe he is just saving money up and following through on his post and is just to busy to update his thread.

Getting a truck into shape, and set up would take time.

My first work was in steel construction
If doors had not taken off I was planning on portable welding and truck even look to what need to be above all other rod burner with a truck.
I had plan to setup simple portable welding in pickup. A portable welding machine shop is over $100.00 per hour. Most jobs are over 40 hours long or $4,000.00 per week. If work 2,000 hours a year that is $200,000.00 per year.

Portable Manual machining seem like a lot of work. Who would you work for? Any cnc tools. ???

CNC is a production machine tool.

The idea is so a welder show up on site and do all need. Never say not my job or I don't know work send to machine shop how has a welder on staff.

Not sure i agree cnc is just for production. In a small setup, it will free you to do other things. Not sure a cnc lathe is portable, but i would consider that if i were planning on mobile machining? Client could send you a drawing and you build the part in walmart parking lot while eating lunch.

Or, you find out your lathe is too small...

I have own lathes that weight 44,000 pounds. You never have lathe big enough for all work. But small will do most work in field.

"My Money Situation is that I am kinda broke. I have a part time job and I get extra money in from doing manual labor jobs. Right now I am working on the first part of my mobile welding repair business the Welding Rig itself. I bought a 2000 dodge ram 2500 4x4 that with a little fixing up should be a decent welding rig for me. I don't look to having this started up any time soon but at least by the end of fall or December maybe I could start to see this come together. what other equipment am I going to need for my repair business. the only real piece of equipment I have is my Victor Journeyman Set I got from cyber weld by pay in 4 from paypal. and my Vulcan Commander 225/150 Stick Welder That I Practice on. I am in the market for a new hood as the harbor freight on that I had broke on me a few days ago."

He needs to go find a mentor who will hire him to sweep, shovel, fetch, and hold stuff still. And he needs to get to the community college and take some welding classes. It's a cheap and easy way to get some skill developed using quality equipment, and get some help from a real person instead of a YouBube video. Students who work hard in class frequently make contacts there that get them hired.
