The stoichiometric ratio for oxy-acetylene is 2.5:1 - 2.5 parts oxygen to one part acetylene.

Oxy-propane is something like 4.5:1 - 4.5 parts oxygen to one part propane... and it doesn't burn as hot.

So 1.8X more oxygen is being used with propane.

Now, if you have something like an oxygen generator for your torch (look it up), it'd probably make a lot of sense to run propane for general cutting and heating and maybe reserve the acetylene for gas welding.

    Random question,

Can you run a torch off a 20lb BBQ propane cylinder?

    Random question,

Can you run a torch off a 20lb BBQ propane cylinder? I’m assuming yes.

I’d kinda like to buy myself one of these setups for home and I don’t really want to keep an acetylene tank

The propane does it take longer to start a cut and more oxygen.

The Mapp gas is faster to start.

Acetylene is fastest and easy to use for welding.

    I have used all three.
Today I use Acetylene and oxygen only it simpler just have one.

When my company I use Mapp for cutting and Acetylene for welding.

FYI Before I had multiple head cutting torch I used propane. I need the speed of starting the cut from Mapp gas.

Re: Oxy-Mapp torch constantly loses puddle.

The mapp on 80psi was the ticket.

3/4” cut clean one pass no issue.

Acetylene still starts the cut much faster.

The tip is also still a bit ridiculous but it’s all we have currently.

If i wanted a small setup for home, would you go with disposable mapp gas cans or 20lb propane? The mapp cans are fairly gross overpriced.

Mapp gas has a cleaner cut over Acetylene and Propane.
If you doing machining to cut it easier that acetylene or Propane.
    Acetylene adds carbon to cut
    Propane takes away carbon

    Mapp keeps about.

With all this information I use Acetylene in retirement.

Is that the same setup you were trying to run using the small bottles shown earlier?

From everything I've read, true MAPP gas is no longer commercially available. The expensive bottles sometimes referred to as MAPP on Ebay aren't true MAPP, all this having been mentioned earlier here, IIRC.
What would you be cutting mainly? How thick? How much or often? Might your city have rules about propane tank storage, and do you have a safe and secure place to store a tank? Do you weld and if so, with electric gear (actually am asking if there's any chance you need an OA system for welding and brazing, so really need acetylene)?

It would be the same setup, which seems less practical than stealing the propane from my BBQ when I need it.

I do not live in the city, I can store propane in my yard.

I do not need to weld. I don’t really need to cut much, I’d just like the power to do it on hand. rosebud probably more often for bending something etc.0

    Dave,
It isn't Mapp that you may be familiar with. It is Map/Pro which is almost identical to propane. You can't buy Mapp gas anymore so not much sense in making it part of discussion.

Same here for acetylene versus propane. At least 5-6 Oxy/Acetylene setups here but not one propane. One Air/acetylene though.

For me Mapp gas is different from propane. Mapp gas is hotter than propane

Acetylene is hotter than Mapp gas.

When had shop I both Mapp gas and Acetylene. Most work was done with Mapp Gas.

Today I only use one torch so it is Acetylene.

    Dave,
Mapp no longer exists so it is of little use to discuss it as though it still a option.

Map/pro which is the gas being discussed is only barely hotter than propane. The op is still referring to the gas as Mapp gas but it isn't it is Map/Pro.

When buying 60 pounds at time not all gas supplies had Mapp gas.
Where live I only had two places that sold Mapp Gass. Last county we had over 10 supplies of gases

But you can still buy small bottles.

Daniel, from the inner quote Dave made in reply to yours, it appears the past, the present and the future all run together and no explaining can help him understand the situation.

No you can't. They do not make the gas anymore. Map/Pro in yellow 1 pound canisters is NOT MAPP gas.

That one is propane only... for that kind of money could you not get the multi-fuel, or have they quit offering that? I had some minor issues with mine at first that were addressed on warranty, but I think you'll be happy with that setup.

    from wiki:

MAPP gas is widely regarded as a safer and easier-to-use substitute for acetylene. In early 2008, true MAPP gas production ended in North America when production was discontinued at the only remaining plant in North America that still manufactured it

You would only need to change the torch tip. The propane regulator i believe will screw into acetylene as well.

Re: Oxy-Mapp torch constantly loses puddle.

    I used all three gases.
    Acetylene for welding
    Propane for rose 🌹 buds
    Mapp gas for cutting.
I used a lot of gas.

Today the only gas I use is Acetylene cost more but works great 👍.
If need a lot gas my plan is to use Propane just take it from BBQ or generator tank.
