Someday I'll get 3ph in the shop. For now, I'll use different diameter drive wheels to adjust speed. A pain but all I can do for now.

My drill press is a 3 phase (I also have a 3 phase metal lathe) and it operates perfectly off of 220 single phase,,



I have an inverter for each 3 phase machine,, the great things are variable speed, and GREAT protection,,

If the drill stalls, or overloads, the inverter just stops everything.
I also get ramp up, ramp down (braking included) ,, the ramp down is actually frequency controlled.
When you hit "stop",, you can watch the frequency coming down on the display,, NO coasting.

That small blue box behind the drill, mounted to the wall,, is the inverter.

I have a couple 3PH 220V motors - are you saying they will run on 3-wire 1PH 220V with a VFD (is that what you mean by "inverter"?)

Exactly, the VFD takes in single phase 220V,, converts it to direct current,, then "chops up the DC" into three phase 220 volts.
Since the VFD is simply chopping the DC,, it can chop at any rate it wants,, so you can have any frequency,, 30HZ, 43HZ, 60HZ,,, etc.
If the motor sees 30HZ,, the motor will turn at half the RPM as compared to the motor speed when it sees 60HZ

I think some of the VFD's can even produce over 60HZ,, to make the motor faster.

The VFD is capable of other frequencies,, so, slow ramp up of motor speed is one of the features.
and the VFD in constantly looking at the amperage,, so if the motor pulls too many amps (with a stall or something) the VFD will shutdown,, protecting everything much better than a fuse,,

DID I mention I used to design VFD's.?? .. LOL!! The ones I designed were 6,600 volts, 25,000 HP,, and bigger than a tractor trailer, etc,,,

I'm a terrible VFD salesman... We provide ABB's, I've been to Vacon's commissioning training - but I don't do enough of them to retain the details (thank dog for field engineers!) I'm 99% working with conveyor "hard parts" not so much electrical.

I have a 30A 110V in the shop that I can (not very legally) switch to 220V 1PH. You just made my morning (now I have to go install a conveyor belt :-(.

Right now, just the 30A/120V RV outlet that was already there. I'd been hmmmming and hawwwwing about it and bugging on the electrical threads.

Been welding on 120V only, but as I get more stuff that would benefit from 220v 1PH, I'll pull the trigger and swap some wires around.

It certainly was a challenge removing that heavy bltch out of a loader bucket. Probably close to 150 lbs.

Right. Eventually I get to install it. Good thing is I have access above the beam so I can use a small hoist to lift a hoist.

Pretty sure your supposed to take them to the beer store and trade them for full ones. Rinse. Repeat.

They have a nice tone when hit - maybe a man-cave themed bell. Hopefully Pat might weigh in if he's had experience with these.

Any ideas on how to vent the thing to be sure there's no pressure in it? The info I'm finding on line is contradictory and confusing at best. Maybe just force the ball in the center down? I ain't buying a tap just to vent them.

If you push down on the ball it will release the pressure in there. Once the pressure is released you can actually take the valve out by unscrewing the lock ring with a punch or spanner or something.
