Scrap metal art or projects

A friend wanted to know if I could make a kindling splitter for her...sure! Made this out of 1/4" x 2" bar, rings are hoops cut out of an old oxy cylinder, blade is leaf spring. It works fine. (I saw one almost like it somewhere on the entrynet, so I stole the idea...). Nice thing about the rings is that I didn't have to forge two circles which probably would have been wonky.

Very cool. Saw one of those around the web somewhere and thought to make one. Supposed to be nice and safe for the fingers.... unless you bash your knuckle on the top ring when you're driving that hammer home. Just what I heard on the street.

My friend Bob did a big demo job last year and saved a lot of stuff from going to the scrappers.

This morning he gave me these two pipe caps. I will make a couple of little welding tables out of them. One for him and one for myself.

Actually this is one that I would buy if it was available.

In my yard this afternoon....



Crane mounted on the back of the lead trailer of an older B train. ( pre Super B era ).

With a short wheelbase, single axle cab over tractor it probably turns in a slightly larger area than a Ford 450. Lol.

Perfect setup for the wanna be artist/fabricator/retired person.

Back in the late 1970’s we had a Kenworth Aerodyne like the one in this pic. 450 Cummins




It made weekly I-5 corridor runs for our farm markets.

Leave the island Monday morning, ferry to Port Angeles Wa and south to Long Beach CA with newsprint.

The return trip was a refrigerated produce “mixer” load. Usually 4-6 pickups in the Salinas Valley then head north home. It was a two driver job to get home by Saturday afternoon.

Truck was serviced Sunday. Rinse and repeat. 50 trips a year.

I only did the trip once. Long haul is a way of life and definitely not my thing.

Another Xmas present done for the missus' brother and wife. Kind of a free-form wind chime design.







The little hemispheres I picked up from a local ornamental iron supply house, the rods are HF tig welding rods, the rest just scrap sheet steel. That crescent and star were a MF'r...

If the hanging chimes are of different lengths they would make different tones when clanging against each other. It looks good btw.

We have a 95ish Mack cabover, single axle tractor coming in for our next auction. I'll post a pic when it comes into the yard.

We also had a “slim” White Freightliner cabover for city delivery.

We had a good working arrangement with Canada Safeway and purchased four trucks from them over the years at a flat rate of $2000 each.

That’s probably the advantage of a small close knit business community.

Cabovers are brutal for climbing in and out of.

Just want to say thanks to BD1 and psa for posting their satisfaction with their burnishing tool / line sanders.

I find mine such a timesaver for removing surface rust as I use a lot of scrap for most of my projects.



And the added bonus is I find it way easier on my back

No problem spending others money.

Actually, I recently bought more wheels for mine. Ordered more of the narrow 1" ones, and a couple of the 320 grit.
This is another tool I should have bought sooner.

I've been using the 1" narrow on my horseshoe artwork. One inch wide is basically the width of a horseshoe. It does an awesome job !
I was thinking about cutting a 4" wide into 1" wide wheels. But then Eastwood sent me a email that the 1" wide were on sale.
When I opened it, it was the last day of sale.
That's why I didn't post it.
Eastwood does a lot of crazy stuff. Especially with their shipping.

Grabbed a couple of these flat bars for the hydraulic press…




and a couple of signs for the shop. Safety first, right?






I will need to go back to pick up 3/4” plate as this was pretty much of a load for the Ranger.






All in all a pretty good morning for picking up scrap material for projects.

I gotta go back for the bigger 2" one some day. It's sitting outside of Bobs shop but I don't think anyone's gonna fun off with it any time soon.

That one must be closer to a ton.....

Those are called blind flanges. I installed many but my largest was only for 24" pipe.

Another sculpture on display in Fredericksburg, VA.
This one is titled "Union".
This will be on loan to the city and on display for one year. A person may purchase it and receive it after that.
If it sells during the year, the city gets a portion on the price. That is counteracted by the money they pay me to borrow it.
If it does not sell during that period, I remove it next October and then sell it on my own.

The best scenario for me would be for it not to sell. I keep the check from the city then keep all the money from a future sale.
Unfortunately, since the display period is one year, you are looking at one and half years for that to come to fruition.
The second best in terms of dollars, is for it to sell during the display. Then next October I receive the balance of the display fee plus a check for the sale.
