I've used the 5 RPM when cutting 20" pipe. I cut and bevel and my son (steamfitter apprentice) practices welding them back together.
One revolution is over 60 linear inches of cut. (pi x dia)

3 HP 1725 rpm motor goes into a 3 HP 5:1 gear reducer.

Place by me has an older lathe , about 20" swing. It was an old live shaft machine. They mounted a road ranger 10 speed between a 15 HP motor and the spindle drive. They use the machine to wind different sizes of pipe to make boilers for heated pressure washers.
