Receiver for Rear of Trailer

My friend Rick wanted me to fabricate a receiver that would mount to the cargo carrier on the rear of the trailer that would allow him to install a bicycle rack to the receiver, when desired. With this design the bicycle rack would be easy to remove from the cargo carrier when it wasn’t required. Rick originally wanted to use a piece of angle iron that he had for the cross brace, but I talked him into using a piece of square tubing, for improved torsional rigidity. I didn’t want the bicycles to bounce around too much -- particularly the heavier electric bicycle.

1. Original Plan


Rick wanted the bottom of of the receiver to be flush with the deck to we installed the receiver tube offset on the top as shown below.

I welded a tab to the top of the cross tube to close off the hole caused by the offset receiver tube.

I would replace the pin in the receiver with a 5/8" fine thread bolt lock nut to take the slop out.

How are you liking that Minion square? I've been thinking about getting a set since they're smaller than their brothers, but....

That will work.
When through bolting wood, using 1/4" plate and drilling a hole excedes a basic flat washer.

I really like all of the Fireball Tools. I noticed that my Minion square has some improvements over the original square that I purchased. It has tapped holes on both sides, which makes it easier to gain access for clamps. It also has knurled screws so that you don’t need any tools.

with the bolt idea, how about making bolt over length then drilling a cross hole so a padlock can be put through. then not only will it stop a thief just unbolting it and walking off with everything, it also means that if bolt starts to back out it can't go very far.

Good idea but it would be a pretty tiny shackle for going through the 5/8" bolt.

Never had a nut back off on the combination I posted and I have driven thousands of miles with a 12k winch I custom fabricated to go in to a hitch receiver tube.

At least the tail lights are somewhat visible.

I always shake my head when I see idiots with 10 bicycles on the back of their little sh*tbox car..... completely blocking the tail lights and marker tag.

Good way to get rear ended.

and I've actually seen that happen.....
