Wow a 6-71 on a welder thats CRAZY

 

Not only that, but it says 2,000 amps. that seems crazy, but I bet it will run a mean Air Arc.

 

these things were and are used as stud welders for the ironworkers. not something you can weld with, but man are they powerful and noisy!

 

Its a nelson Stud welder. All nelson did was take a SAM-650 and put their timer and capacitor box on top and called it a stud welder. This thing is older than dirt. I bet its completely burned out inside. Stud welding is hard on these machines.

 

I used to have a Hobart stick welder with a 3-71 Detroit attached to it but... this doesn't really compare. As for the need for a 6-71? another process to consider is wire feed. Some sub-arc jobs push 1/4 inch wire and that takes some amps to melt.

 

I'll bite, what exactly is stud welding?
