That was a few years ago, my friend still uses the mower.

Hey that's not a fail! Crude, yes, but a first-ever project that restores functionality and it's still running years later is a win!

We're not all pros here. My farm repairs are mostly, equally simple. (But mostly on heavier material). Everything I've ever welded in 20 years has stayed welded.

My welds have gotten prettier, but even the earliest ones were sufficient for their purpose.

I just finished browsing the entire thread, some very interesting attempts, even learned a few things.

I'll post my first project. Attached some panels cut out of a rusty refrigerator to a rusty mower deck to cover some holes. Used a no name 120 stick welder with only a high low switch on the front, using 1/16 6013. The only way I could get it to run was to drag the rod across the deck towards the patch, by the time I got there the rod was hot enough it would stay lit. There is a few spots where he metal was so thin I kept blowing out, just kept welding onto the edge until I found something solid.

That weld screams 'amateur'. It was one of my early projects with the $72 HF 90A-AC flux welder that was my first 'upgrade' from my big AC stick welder. (I'm now two mig welders later. That HF welder was near useless, it was a poor tool to learn wire welding on).

Ugly weld, yes. But I've used that shovel interchangeably with an undamaged one for nearly a decade now and the weld has held up. 'Good enough for the girls I go with!'

Crap that's scary. What would ever happen if someone used that to hold up a car for instance and it broke and killed someone? Would HF be responsible as the distributor? I'm thinking yes

That's why I dont buy much from HF. I like their gloves, air nozzles (which break or get stolen anyways) and moving blankets, that's about it

Harbor Freight! Where final quality control is left for the customer to figure out. It saves HF some money. "Some Assembly Required" seems to mean you need to inspect everything before use.

Notice they accept customer returns with no resistance. The clerks probably see stuff that doesn't meet spec, all the time.

I've returned things for refund occasionally. The most blatant example of something not meeting spec was the '200 lb' plastic furniture dolly. I stepped on it , 180 lbs, broke it in half. Took it back and got the refund. Then went and stepped on and broke two more that were in stock, to illustrate the problem.

Similar, the ratchet in the $7.99 socket set stripped with moderate pressure. I was under the tractor on my hands and knees pushing on the handle, not a position where I could apply much force. They smiled and gave me a whole new set. Stripped that, soon. Another new set provided. When I stripped that third ratchet I substituted a Taiwan no-name ratchet into the set and haven't had a problem since. This cheap set is left in the open for casual use where it's a nuisance to go get my locked up good tools, Craftsman, Thorsen, etc. HF should never have included a set of 1/2" sockets along with a 3/8" size ratchet.

Any time buy from Harbor Freight there some redoing.

That is why I posted a redo on (welder 170) I purchased from HF.

I've said several times that HF's 90 amp AC "Mig" flux welders must be the export version of what's used in China for the crappy welds you find underneath furniture from Target, Walmart, etc.

Looks like this shelving was fabricated using that model welder. I too got results like these photos, trying to use the HF AC welder long ago before I bought better gear. The splatter is the give-away of AC welding.

I believe you are mistaken.

I walked into the maintenance shop of an industrial facility. A box lay on the table, it looked like Hellen Keller welded it. The story was only one welding helmet was available. The helper used the helmet to position the pieces, the welder closed his eyes to weld. I wish I had been there to witness it!
