Maybe it's hardfacing that would be difficult to cut through? Or it could just be scary enough to thwart off any thief. It gives me the Heebie Jeebies.

I actually saw a weld like that on a 350PSI 3" line on a drilling rig compressor, maybe not that bad but ugly. Took me an hour and a half of grinding in a tight spot to get it fixed right.

The first guy that tried to fix it was a newb "business owner" that was cheap.

I have never understood how someone could pigeon squeeze something like that together each one of those welds is tons of time. And wire. it probably has interesting sound characteristics.

Can you even imagine?!! It seems it would take longer to do whatever that is than it would to learn to do it correctly....

Looks to be MIG solid wire with no gas, then everything else was wrong.

Truth is I've borrowed Chinese MIG welders I wasn't able to do better.
My first experience with a MIG was a Miller, in 1978 dollars it cost $3500. A friend & I stitched a BMW 320i together made from two wrecks mashed on opposite ends. I didn't buy it then. Damn! that welder was sweet!
Though I tried several cheap welders over the years, I didn't own a MIG until 2010. The Millermatic 252 is as sweet as the first Miller.

Yeah but you and most anyone with good sense would stop that project and take the part to someone who knows what he's doing, instead of continuing to pile ugly on top of ugly like that fool did.

It's like that other post where the "welder" had no idea what he was doing, yet never seemed to ask himself why his welds don't look like other welds he's seen. Crazy stuff--if I were the mechanic and someone brought me something like that I would either refuse the job or tell the customer he's looking at a complete exhaust system replacement. No way I'd waste hours grinding on that.

I'm confused.... I'm trying to figure out which way the previous company welded up these tanks.

Did they mig weld the outside or inside of this stainless open tank?

They had a go from the outside and failed.

Left it outside and let the birds crap on it?
I'd say up hill stick on the outside and lower mess on the inside and downhill on the upper weld inside, with his/her eyes closed.........Mike

Judging by what's posted in this forum, I'd say the opposite. Some will spend 4+ times longer making a mess that a decent welder would have done properly in no time. I was briefly working in a shop with a guy that wanted to build race cars. I got $12,000 worth of all new Lincoln equipment in a package deal, mig, Tig and plasma torch. His Mig welder was absolute junk but he was too cheap to replace it and he wasn't a good weldor. Kind of scary he used it to build modified cars for many years. When I packed up and left on a Sunday, when he wasn't there, he was probably more pizzed I took the welding equipment than me leaving. He was using my new Wirematic 255 to weld rusted out exhaust pipes on cars and the Procut 55 plasma but I never got paid for any of it despite having a lease/purchase deal on the equipment. I even resorted to taking the nozzle and contact tip out and locking them in my cabinet. It was just an office cabinet and easy to pry open but most people would have got the hint. Someone was wanting a rail dragster built. All Tig welded and he figured the welding end would only be 4 or $500 on the project. I'm sure a full length rail dragster is in the 10 thousand plus range. Probably less if not top alcohol or top fuel but still pricey. You have to be a contortionist to weld it to boot. A really good Tig welder I know said he wouldn't even take on a project like that because of all the bending and twisting to weld it. That's another part of the reason I pulled out.

I'm less a welder than electrician.

In my experience some paying customers prefer to have it fu&^%d up. I used to describe a local employer: "He'll gladly pay double to have it fu$%^d up."

They feel they beat the system doing it wrong. If they avoided paying a welder to do it, payed somebody's brother in law a case of beer to do it, it was a triumph! They outsmarted the system! They never notify the inspector.

The company I work for does custom dairy equipment we see welds like this all the time in the field. Maintenance guys who don't clean dirty parts up and don't gas the backs of welds on thin ****. Such a nightmare working on that stuff

Nothing special.
Off road Jeep bumper modification.
Apparently by first time welder with mig or flux core.
Jeep was on my property when I bought house.

I just finished browsing the entire thread, some very interesting attempts, even learned a few things.

I'll post my first project. Attached some panels cut out of a rusty refrigerator to a rusty mower deck to cover some holes. Used a no name 120 stick welder with only a high low switch on the front, using 1/16 6013. The only way I could get it to run was to drag the rod across the deck towards the patch, by the time I got there the rod was hot enough it would stay lit. There is a few spots where he metal was so thin I kept blowing out, just kept welding onto the edge until I found something solid.





That was a few years ago, my friend still uses the mower.
