Hey Black Wolf... I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm hanging steel with a worker from Canada. Actually, no I won't, because the last thing I'll do is keep a man willing to travel to work, to actually work so he can put food on the table.
Just so you're aware, that "Opportunity Awaits" program isn't BS. It's a recruiting effort between the Canadian oil and gas industry and the Veterans of Foreign War. Vets are being specifically recruited on this program because they tend to have a background that lends itself to hard physical, skilled labor in remote areas. Don't you dare start in on some bullsht diatribe about American vets, either... I served in Iraq with Canadians. Good chaps, those Canucks.
Oh yeah... those jobs don't BELONG to anyone but the company who is HIRING. They can hire whomever they like, and the address on your driver license isn't exactly a qualifier for work.
EDIT: That being said, I'm probably going to be headed out your way for work when I hear back from these folks. If you happen to live in the area, I'll be glad to bend an elbow and do some 16 oz curls with ya... if you can stomach a beer with an American.
I gotta disagree with you on that one Jason, I know what it's like to be filling positions here and scraping the bottom of the barrel because there is no one else. We need the talent.....bring it on. I wasn't aware of the Vet connection, that makes it all the more worthwhile. Benz if your passing through, I'll bend an elbow with you.
If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Obviously you two DIDN'T see the smiley face and the disclaimer on the second line???
Honestly, I thought it was SPAM... Hadn't seen the thread for days so I thought it was reported and deleted.
The response was intended pretty tongue in cheek, but if you want to get your panties wadded up, go for it. Matters little to me.
There are a few comments made that I disagree with, but that is a small matter. I don't drink but I'd buy you one anyway!
Carry on...

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is proud to announce that its partly owned veterans jobs board has secured an exclusive employment initiative with Alberta, Canada, that could see thousands of U.S. veterans heading north to work on their oil pipeline.
“This is a great opportunity for veterans, transitioning military, National Guard and reservists, and their family members,” said Ted Daywalt, founder and CEO of VetJobs (www.vetjobs.com), a recognized industry leader in helping veterans find work.
“Though America’s Keystone Pipeline is delayed, the Canadians are moving forward on their side of the border and have an immediate need for tens of thousands of workers,” said Daywalt, whose website averages more than 55,000 daily job postings by employers strictly interested in hiring veterans. He said the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation anticipates a shortage of 114,000 workers in the Alberta area, and they want to hire American veterans to fill that shortage.
According to the development corporation, the positions being offered are long term, with many paying as much as 30 percent more than similar industry positions in the United States. Some positions will require a move to Canada, but many others will allow veterans to commute — working several weeks in Canada, then one week back home.
The skilled positions they are currently hiring for include journeymen pressure pipe welders, heavy equipment technicians, steamfitter-pipefitters, structural ironworkers, millwright and carpenter/scaffolders. Professional staff vacancies include construction quality auditors, quality examiners/inspectors, cost estimators, high voltage construction managers, refinery shift supervisors, planners/schedulers, power engineers (operators), project control leads, project managers/coordinators, and health, safety and environment professionals.
“This is a fantastic opportunity and I’m proud of our affiliation with VetJobs,” said VFW National Commander Richard L. DeNoyer, of Middleton, Mass. “Helping thousands of veterans to get well-paying jobs in an important industry just further proves that no one does more for veterans than the VFW.”
To apply for the new positions, go to www.vetjobs.com, click on Search Jobs, then type “opportunity awaits” into the company search field. Additional job postings will be added in the coming months as the Canadian pipeline project progresses.
Jason, sorry to jump on ya so quickly, but surely you've seen the sh1tshow going on down here for the last 3 years. This president likes to flush infrastructure money into superficial road resurfacing projects that do little to increase the infrastructure capability to grease the wheels of commerce, while canning a real infrastructure project that would allow us to buy our oil from you guys instead of Islamic theocracies.
I'm looking forward to coming up there to work. I've not seen much of Canada except for Newfoundland and St. Johns when I was flying in the Marine Corps... and I know how you mainlanders feel about the Noofies.
Plus, it'll be nice getting paid in a currency that I don't have to worry about taking a dive in the next 36 months from printing too much of it.
No worries Boss... It was not my intent to offend anyone.
Just as a warning, Alberta is FULL of Newfies! In fact they put on an "East Coast Garden Party" in GP every year.
I don't mind 'em... I know some that I consider good friends. Most of 'em are good Fun Loving Maniacs... But they DO drink too much!
My wife is from down East, but from the "OTHER Island" - PEI... She grew up about 20 mins down the road from where Stan (SWells) grew up. Small world.
In any event, best of luck to you and other former service men and service women - I can see the value of this program if I view it from your side of things.
Have a Good Night.
